At the risk of seeming to be overly concerned about PageRank (I'm not really a PageRank Maniac), I nevertheless have a question about the PageRank indicator on the GoogleBar.
I've noticed that when I click from the SERP to a listed site, about 70% of the time the PageRank is grayed out on the GoogleBar. However, If I simply Ctrl-N to bring up that page in a new browser window, the PageRank indicator in the new window is live.
Google suggested I go to GoogleBar options and set "Fix PageRank through proxies (experimental)", but that doesn't seem to help.
I'm curious what the issue is. Does anyone know? And is there a prognosis for how soon it might be fixed?
Thanks!

HI Bill:
Not sure exactly what your problem is (works fine for me) but in order to show the PR on the Toolbar, information has to be sent from your computer to Google and back again telling G what site you are surfing in that window and what the PR is. If you are accessing the Net from a network, through a proxy, have your browser security settings on high or are located behind a firewall there may be restrictions on the flow of that information which would cause the toolbar to be gray.

The Toolbar PR has been funky for at least a couple of months.
It has been hinted that it may stay that way for many weeks yet.

It acts the same way with me half the time. I'm just at home on a dial up. Sometimes the PR thing works and sometimes you have to go back and reenter the URL two or three times.

I am on a dail up from home as well. Google is grey barred at the moment according to my toolbar. :)

I think sometimes it has to do with if your browser is pulling the page off of the net or off of your hard drive. I have noticed that at times when I am surfing (or just open my browser) and the browser loads the page from my hard drive cache rather than pulling the page from the net the Google Tool Bar PR is gray.
I have to refresh the page to see the actual PR.
I am not saying that this is what is necessarily happening with your browser/tool bar, however this is what I have observed on mine.

I did a full refresh. I think all I was trying to say was that the PR seems to be a bit strange at the moment. As long as my SERP is OK I am trying not to look at PR.

I'm using PageRank to assess competing pages. So I'm usually looking at it when viewing a new site clicked to from a Google SERP.
As such, the page is almost never coming from cache. And about 80% of the time (maybe more), it's grayed out. Yet if I open a new browser window (Ctrl-N) the new version of the page has a live PageRank indicator. And THAT"S the version that's likely to come form my cache!
Weird, huh?

Go to Tools for IE
Click on Internet Options
Temporary Internet Files ' Settings '
Check for newer versions of stored pages
Tick ' Everytime you start Internet Explorer '
That way you won't need to refresh your pages. But if you make some changes to a page, you will still need to click ' Refresh ' during that session on the Net.
There is another option
' Every visit to the page '. That would take care of it, but it will slow you down if you are browsing back and forth between pages.

Thanks -- I've made that change. It should help stay current in general.
But as I said, I realy don't think this symptom is a cache issue. The Page Rank on the toolbar is grayed out the first time I ever visit the page. Yet when I open it a second time in a new browser window, the Page Rank is live.
I suspect a minor bug in the GoogleBar.
