Anyone use clickbank for affiliates for ebook or information downloads?
I was doing a search to learn how to secure download pages and I read somewhere that both clickbank and paypal have security issues in which anyone with half a brain can spend a few hours to search and steal your download stuff without paying.
My question, is how do you protect your download pages from being stolen?

I would be very interested in knowing more about this, too. I am working on converting my sister's books into e-books. I believe Jill uses Clickbank for her Nitty-Gritty book. Maybe she will have some inputs.

I was searching tonite and found this program... but is it worth it? http://the-digital-vault.com/
Currently, I email the ebooks, but even that is no guarantee of protection.
Would love thoughts from anyone on protecting downloads!

I believe this link may answer some of your questions on Security issues with Clickbank.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the issues with Clickbank are people stealing the download link. It's people substituting their own affiliate ID and "stealing" your commission. There are programs to mask your affiliate link which take care of this problem. I know Karon uses one.
For PayPal, I use PayPal Companion, which supposedly hides your download page so that people can't steal that. It seems to work well for me.
I wrote up a review of it in a my newsletter here: PayPal Companion (http://www.highrankings.com/issue045.htm#stuff)

Hi -
I found this guy's site has some good tips and he sells an ebook related to security issues around PayPal and CLickBank - mainly at the server end during the sale. I had all the same questions you did and more. His explainations seemed to help.
If someone does find your download link they can make some good guesses as to what directory your files are stored. If you have index browing turned on (which is normal) then they can likely find your download files. This needs to be considered for digital audio and digital books (exe or pdf).
His ebook gives a number of no cost things you can righ away. He includes some software for hiding files and directories and he mentions various other software programs for diehard security that can be purchased.
I wouldn't over worry about it. I get a client's ebook (audio or text) up, then I cycle back and start applying various security measures as needed. It's not like there is going to be swarm of hackers waiting at the door for the slightiest chance to enter (well, not yet anyway).
I'm not an affilate. Just passing this link along

Correct?

If anyone has any more insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated. This has showed up in my logs recently as the referring URL:
http://hop.clickbank.net/?xxxxx.724leads
Is this legit?
the 724leads is me.
Thanks

When someone signs up to be an affiliate for you, the example URL they give is like the one in your referer logs. With the xxx's. The person is supposed to substitute their own affiliate ID for the xxx's, but some may click on that link and that's why you're seeing it.

Thanks Jill,
Jeez, I almost feel like a sheep at the slaughter! I checked out your Paypal Companion link and may have to do something like that.
Thanks--you are the greatest--really!

I am serious about looking into that disable ebook when someone wants a refund program...
Has anyone used it?
Today I got my first ever request for a refund, because she claims that she couldn't print the ebook and that pages were missing after having me send it to her twice. Mind you I sent the same ebook to a friend to see if my files were corrupted, and she could not only read and print, but no pages were missing. And yes, I also checked on my own system :)
I normally don't give refunds becuase you can't get anything back with electronic books, but I just don't want to deal with her. SO I gave her a refund, but now she has free reign of my ebook.
Bugger as they say!
So who uses one of those disable ebook programs and how do they work?

ok ...
There are two basic ways of creating ebooks. The end result being either a PDF file (which runs on Mac and PC) or a .exe file that runs on a PC.
The advantage of a .exe based ebook is that you can ebedded more interesting media and it's easier to disable access to the book.
You can use passwords in PDFs but you cannot disable the PDF from being used once it's left your hands.
So, a .exe based ebook gives you the maximum security capability.
I use EbookGenerator
http://4webresults.com/ebookgenerator
There is a lock out mechanism in there. I copied this from their site:
Single Password
Protect your eBooks with a single password.
Registration Key System and Reg Key Generator FREE!
Make your ebooks work on only one computer. You even get our Registration Key Generator to generate an UNLIMITED NUMBER OF REGISTRATION KEYS FREE!
Creates FREE Trial eBooks
Give away FREE TRIAL EBOOKS! These ebooks can expire after either 1.) a certain number of days or 2.) after a certain number of uses. The user will then be required to purchase the product to access the information again.
Secure Certain Pages
You can opt to secure only certain page within your ebook. Here is what I mean...
Give a way 3 Free Chapters of your ebook, get the person hooked on your information then when they try to access Chapter 4 a screen will come up telling them they need to register or buy the ebook to access the rest of the information.
EBOOK DISABLING NEW - Read Below for more details!
----------------------------------------------
As a side note: you're going to have to accept some loss due to theft or people asking for refunds and keeping the ebook, or passing the ebook to others ... and so forth. It's part of the business of being online. You'll want to find a way to let that not bother you (unless it's out of hand of course) and focus your creative energies on more ebooks.
All the best

Advisor,
I'm trying to set up an order form for PayPal and did not understand the process so I asked them a question regarding information flow from the time a buyer places an order.
Nowhere could I find infomation regarding how I will know if it's OK to ship and how I would notify the buyer the buyer where to go to get his download. I remember hearing something about a download page which you made reference to. This is their reply:
********************
From PAYPAL
Thanks for writing to us. I appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your questions.
Once the buyer makes the purchase, we will send you an email with the purchase details to both you and the buyer. Since you have been paid, you can ship the merchandise right away!
*******************
All I can see from the PP submittal form is that the buyer is returned to a page which most people set up as a "Thank You" page, not a download page.
Is this what you were referring too?
The above procedure looks awfully time consuming with the buyer having to wait for instructions on where to download his purchase.
So it looks like this is a mechanical process, not one where the buyer get a notice to "go to page xxx to download your new purchase."
Still very confused.
Thanks for your time,
fastfred (sometimes known as half-fastfred)

Hi Fred, paypal should be able to answer that question easily. I would think if they were a good company they would have all of that ironed out.
