I would love some examples of people who have successfully incorporated Google ads on their site. I have found the ads hard to work into my existing site -- they look a bit out of place and I was wondering whether anyone came up with a good way to integrate them.
Also - any way to make them open in a different page without altering the Google script? (My ads appear on a forum so I can make every link open in a new window)
Many thanks.

As far as I know, there's no way to modify the Adsense box, and I'm pretty sure their T's and C's would not permit it.
I haven't seen them integrated into a forum, but it's no different than trying to integrate a banner or skyscraper ad format into any site. I've got the skyscraper in the navigation panel on my content site at www.insideoutmarketing.com, and we're doing very well.

Jimworld forums use them on the actual thread pages.

I've been testing AdSense ads on five sites. They work best if the page is very simple. If you want people to click on the ads, the ads need to be more appealing than the text on the page.
You can achieve some astrounding click-through rates (I wish I was allowed to give you details) if you design a very plain page and place a skyscraper panel high on the page.
Here's an example of a site I own which is working extremely well with AdSense: http://www.cheap-computers-guide.com
You can see how good a job Google does of choosing appropriate ads.
I also have an affiliate forum which is displaying Google ads:

As you can see, sometimes Google can't figure out what ads to display on the forum pages, so it displays charity ads.

I got lucky in a sense, I was just beginning a new layout, blue being my typical color for the site. Google made it easy for me to decide on exactly what shade of blue ;). I also placed the skyscraper inside a table with my second shade as the background(not totally complete yet).
ahhh seamless integration ;)

Same here  . When we noticed good income from adsense, we redesigned the hole site to match Google skyscraper color scheme and it works just perfect for us. Now we are going to add it to our forum.
Example is here: Dating & Personals Network (http://www.lovecompass.com/)
