Do unrelated hits help or hurt?

Hi folks, I have read through the forum and have not seen this topic, so sorry if it's already been done!

I just opened a commercial website http://www.engsoaps.com and am hoping to increase my ranking.

Firstly, how do I find my ranking?

Second, I have a secondary, unrelated page as a subdomain under this one, which is pretty popular (well by my standards anyway). http://www.bob33333.com I have linked to my main page and I have an image hosting service under my main domain for members of a message board related to the subdomain. These images get a lot of hits.

Are the image hits getting me any attention, or is it harmful in some way?

You should research your keywords using www.wordtracker.com and find the best ones that you know people will use to find your site. Then go to www.google.com and do a search on the keyword phrase to see where you come up.

You can also do a search for your domain. This works good at times.

yourdomain.com

just like that. Or, find a phrase that only pertains to your site and search for that. Your images should not have a bearing on ranks at all.
