If they only had some type of a random human check of sites in their directory, they would have a better directory. They could simply check the categories that are more spam prone than others. They certainly know which cats those are, but for some reason, they do not seem to care too much about all the Spam the directory has, and how many sites thrive on being able to spam their directory.

It's in their best interests to look the other way.
If they deny too many of these, people will stop spending the $300 to get in.
Plus those editors probaly only spend about 30 seconds actually reviewing the site.

One would think that it was in their best interest to provide the best directory possible. But apparently not!

SubmissionR, I'm not talking about the initial reviews. We all know that a page submitted and reviewed is many times switched out for a different page. EX: business name or logo is switched for the real one once an editor lists the site. This way the spammer can submit a page with a different logo showing the name with a keyword phrase in it, then right after the editor lists it, the spammy will swipe out the logo with his real logo, with his real business name. This kind of thing happens all the time, and could be stopped with random human checks in categories prone to abuse by the spammers.

Wow it looks like nearly all the sites in that diamond category should be removed. It would be so funny if Yahoo went in and did a big sweep and deleted all the redirected sites and stuff. They really should. They could make even more money because all the sites would have to reapply and pay another $300! Even big sites like Ashford.com has gotten into it with a fake name and a redirect. These companies never cease to amaze me.

i think a lot of people misunderstand SPAM. not that I'm justifying it... it's as annoying for me as anyone else.
let's all have a big bite of Scientifically Produced Animal Matter (SPAM). --mmmmmm--- good.
i guess i just pick my battles. ya know, i have enough problems with the REAL world and the REAL arseholes (the guys who beat their wives, don't pay their child support, etc.)
[recently i posted a message about a site that was beyond SPAM, they were pagejacking Yahoo! even then i don't want to get my panties in a bunch! Yahoo! are big boys, as are g00gle. they've made their bed, now let them... <snip>].
***
two points to consider:
Bill Gate's famous comment. "People who think that business should 'be their friend' are very naive".
And the fact that both g00gle and yah00! are based in Silicon Valley. I lived there (working for a very large well-known software company, easily in the top 10 software companies in the world).
It costs more per square meter to put someone in a Dilbert type cube than most people can imagine! (401k, health care, employee benefits, sign-on bonuses, parking space in the parking lot, computers, bandwidth, electricity, coffee and toilet paper!!)
---
Let us not forget that Yahoo! is free FOR THE END-USER. Just like television and radio are free for the end-user.
Therefore they have to make their money somewhere.
At least with the web we USUALLY get to work a on "PULL" model. i.e. not TOO often is something "PUSHed" to us without our consent.
...'cause unless you all want to start paying $4.95 a month to use Yahoo!, g00gle or MSN... I think we'd all better accept SPAM in the directories and in the search engines for what it is: EXTRA NOISE. heck, even with the public libraries in America -- it ain't FREE -- it comes from at taxpayer expense. (now wouldn't THAT be a pork barrel type of overspending situation!! US government subsidized search engines/directories. *ugh*)

Oh yes. I understand about the extra noice but I also know that extra noice takes money out of the pockets of honest, hardworking sites and puts it in their own.

heh. EXACTLY.
they put it in their own pockets.... and now the search engines and the directories are trying to get a piece of that revenue!
(watches at Yahoo!, LookSmart, Inktomi and AltaVista stick their hand into the collective pockets of their webmasters).
... i guess the directories/search engines of the world were tried of watching EVERYONE else get a chunk of the eCommerce pie.

[beats the search engine/directories] BACK BACK BACK!!!!
that's myyyyyy pie!!!
