View Full Version : Freeware tracking systems that do NOT use logs?

I've put up a very simple one page site on my ISP's server (part of the free server space that comes with my internet connection) at http://home.houston.rr.com/interplan/

Since this is a free account under the ISP domain name, I do not have access to referrer logs.

Is there any simple, free method available to track visitors and referral information? I'm not even sure that I have access to put any cgi, php, etc. on the site (and I'm not interested in paying for a real hosting account as this page was not created to make money).

Is there a way to use Javascript to capture referrer information and write it to a file on the server?

My crazy thoughts for the day.... :)

That is a cheap solution Bernard. I've used it in the past.

I know it is possible as my company has its own system for SE statistics. It is some javascript sending referer info to a database. Our tool then do some statistics about referers and keywords used to access the website.

You might want to look into DAS, the data archiving service from Re_Invigorate (http://www.reinvigorate.net/system/). It doesn't write to a file, but it tracks a good deal of information. The only problem I have with it (apart from the DB crashing now and then) is that it only tracks one page, but for a site that only is a single page that's obviously not an issue.

Cool! Thanks guys. I wasn't aware that these services existed.

I'm going to experiment with the service Doug mentioned as their privacy policy claims they are not aggregating the results of all their users like DAS is doing. Also, I wasn't interested in adding code to my page to actually publish the stats - I just wanted to measure them for myself! I think DAS is probably more sophisticated than what I need.

Thanks again....

Thanks guys! I'm getting what I wanted now. There is some very interesting and useful intelligence in this site's log - at least, as pertains to my main business.
