Hi - I have just about had it with Lenz multimedia and think it's time I found a more reliable host. Can anyone please make recommendations. I have about 10 accounts to open with the largest requiring 100MB of space. Ideally, I'd like to have a reseller account so I can set up hosting accounts for my clients via a control panel. Suggestions please?

We have been very happy with DewaHost...we chose them based upon a potential need for low-cost-high-bandwidth, with 1 GB of space, and from a high-quality provider. I have no idea about the reseller account issue with them, though.

I'm very happy with HTTPme.com You can get exactly what you are looking for, a multiple domain WHM account and you manage each domain with cPanel. This is a Linux RedHat shop so no Windoze. Blue also has an account there -- that's how I got directed to here :)

Hi Kal,

I've been hosting/reselling with HTTPme (http://www.httpme.com) for about 6 months now.

You'll love their customer service, which they're absolutely fanatical about (they guarantee a 6 hour response but they often respond in minutes rather than hours). They have no phone support, which I was loathe to try at first, but now I'm convinced that in their case, it's not necessary.

They also have no uptime guarantee but they post all their server uptimes and none have gone below 99% that I know of, since I've been there.

They have an excellent community (forum style) in which you'll most likely find the support answers you need without having to submit a trouble ticket.

There is no SSH access, but through the control panel (cPanel/WHM) you can sutup and run cron jobs.

They are a young, growing, hard working crew (currently 4 techs (24/7)) HQ'd in Austrailia, with servers located in the NAC (New Jersey, USA), and I believe this makes them ideal in that they are hungry to succeed, wary of a high growth rate, and willing to listen to their client base.

<edit> Nipped at the post by the good captain... </edit>

I'm real happy with ValueWeb (www.valueweb.com). Their service has been rock solid (~4 years now for me) and their customer/technical support is outstanding - 24 hour telephone, e-mail and interactive chat (from their website) support.

They offer reseller / affiliate accounts, but I have not investigated/used that program.

Rackspace and Rackmy (windows) are both great. The customer support at Rackspace is just unmatchable. Take a look.

Hi Kal, Why don't you contact Ryan (analog) in here? He's my server administrator and a hosting company.

hi kal,

why don't you try here
http://www.webhostingtalk.com. you can browse the offers or just post your own requirements and let them reply. they're all very tekky and over my head but are patient and know their stuff.

once you have a shortlist of potential hosting cos you can do a search on their names and find negative/positive feedback within the forum.

worked very well for me.

FWIW i decided on united hosting uk
because the offered me a reseller plan that suited(not one of their standard reseller plans), their rep was excellent, and although their servers are east coast, they are based in the UK so i can deal with support when we're all awake in europe.

however they may not suit you, so give web hosting talk a go.

craig That's where I found HTTPme.com! ;) But before I found them I found another one in the same place and that one did not work out.

What I'm saying is that the onus of finding a good host is still on you. webhostingtalk.com is a good starting point.

craig Craig:

I did what I thought was a proper search and I liked what I saw. I have been in business for a long time and I did what I thought needed to be done. On the other hand, I was pretty green in the hosting business and that's where I went wrong in my search. I chose a host with Sun boxes, a big mistake, IMO.

After that experience I now recommend using the most commonly used server hardware and software to run a hosting business:

A Pentium compatible box running some flavor of free Unix or Linux (RedHat is my current one), php, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, WHM/cPanel.

For my home development I use a Mac iBook running OS-X with php, MySQL, phpMyAdmin installed.

Also, beware of any offer that is too good to be true. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space. In a shared hosting environment, which is what Kal is looking for, you need some strict Terms of Use (TOS) so that all user get their fair share of all the resources at all times.

Live and learn! ;)

Well, after viewing webhostingtalk and the HTTPme forums, I have chosen HTTPme as my new host. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you Blue and Denny for recommending them.

Aussie Bob and the team are on the ball and so helpful. They also use the same cpanel as my last host so the transfer has been nearly painless so far for me and my clients. I have been with them for less than 24 hours and I've already set up 10 accounts with dedicated IP addresses and I'm just waiting for DNS propagation. What a breath of fresh air to deal with friendly, responsive hosts! :thumb:

I had a look at those hosting companies, but they all seem to use Linux.
I am on Windows and my current host is using Apache.

Any recommendations along those lines? My current host has stuff up my formmail program somehow and he don't seem to be prepare to fix it because he does not know what has happen to it. He keeps telling me to check my form, but I have not changed anything to it for months. The thing stopped working after he had a problem with his computer. So I am shopping for a new host.

If you have a bunch of .asp scripts then it will be too much work to switch. If not, the switch should be easy. I moved from a Mac platform to Unix and Linux with zero problems but I did have to redo my scripts in php.

Aussie - I would definitely consider trialling HTTPMe. The fact they use Linux is a bonus I think because I'm sure it means fewer server crashes and security issues like those you get with a Windows environment.

One month on and the service is still excellent and the trouble ticket response time brilliant. They get a big :thumb: from me.

Hey Kal,

There have been a lot of suggestions already, but I have to swear by my webhost SpookyMedia (http://www.spookymedia.com/). All the development tools you could want for a maximum of $13 a month with unlimited everything, and a Linux platform to boot.

And, of course, the real test of a web host is response to crises, for which Randi has been incredible (max I've ever waited is 6 hours... including some 2am panics).

Keep it real,

Rob

I would love to try HHTPME.
Unfortunately, Windows is very important to me as I have a zillion programs running on it.

Furthermore I don't know the first thing about Linux.
I have a Linux program somewhere which apparently can be installed side by side with Windows but I have not tried to install it.

(i posted this here a few months back) i used to go to webhostingtalk.com and post my requirements but they DON'T allow that anymore and can only suggest that you troll their offers (a great way to while away the day) or go to their paid advertising section.

if anyone has a similar suggestion please advise.

leads on to post #2...

...the reason being, i now need an additional reseller package that offers hosting with UK-based IP addresses, preferably with the ensim control panel.

my current host (unitedhosting.co.uk - bless their souls) cannot offer UK-based IP addresses, otherwise i wouldn't be asking.

any recommendations?
