Hi All,
I have submitted my site to ODP 4 months back. To my surprise, it has been not indexed :(
Today again I submitted.
How much time will it take to index?

Hi Savvy,
ODP comprises hundreds of volunteer editors, of which I represent one, and as such there is always huge variation in the timeliness, friendliness and strictness of different categories.
My suggestion to you would be:
1. Ensure your page is OK.. works in both browsers, has content, nav, useful, loads OK, not down, etc. DMOZ aren't as strict as Yahoo but they still won't (normally) put in garbage.
2. Try resubmitting. Occasionally suggestions can be lost.
3. Check if the cat you submitted to has an editor listed (down the bottom.) If so, try clicking on their name and sending them a (very) polite message asking if they had a chance to check out your submission (don't forget to include your URL and the date of submission!)
4. If there is no editor assigned to that cat, work your way up the cats until you find an editor, and ask them.
5. If you still have no luck, look for other editors in similar cats, preferably above the one you're trying to get into. Still being polite, explain the situation, including the time you've been waiting.
If all else fails, post another message here and I'm sure one of the friendly DMOZ editors who frequent this board will try to help you out.
Hope this helps!

Thank you very very much for your answer.
I will try to contact the respective category editor and get back to you soon.
Thanks again.

newriver,
Could you please tell me more about this:
What about site positioning on Google? Any connection with DMOZ positioning there? I was given the analyse in my firm about Google (from june) stating that Google search presents first 10 results from ODP. Is that information valid?
kaj
21-11-2001, 20:22/08:22PM
Hi Dina,
This is false, however it may appear like that as the top 10 results from Google are generally sites who know their marketing and hence have submitted to ODP, so the ODP description will appear under the entry in Google.
ODP does provide a boost via PageRank so a site listed in DMOZ (and any directory for that matter) will be pushed up the Google results just a little bit, however this isn't an ODP thing per se -- it will occur with any link (see the ongoing discussions on PageRank in the Google forum for more detailed information on this.)
Hope this helped,
Kaj

Thanks, Kaj.
It helps a lot for I was beginning to wonder if I see well. You see, for the keywords I've picked randomly it just didn't appear like that at all. In one case I've got just one site out of ten on both listing, and not on the same position. I've seen the ongoing discussions on PageRank, but also have the analyse done by my firm in front of me. I wonder how did my firm come to that conclusion? Was it really like that in june? Or ever?

Hi Dina,
I'd imagine they just saw a page full of Google results and noted the ODP description under each, and assumed this was an indication ODP data was served first. Probably a very easy misjudgement to make!
Whilst Google has a close relationship with ODP, it has never (to my knowledge) served up ODP listings before normal results.
Warmest regards,
Kaj

last night i found a log entry for an odp edit, someone had changed my listing title from "Charleston Fishing Guide" to captain adam ridgeway,,,,The ip was 24.4.252.232 which is @home internet service for eastern SC,
needless to say this has really hurt my traffic, i think Charleston Fishing Guide is the correct listing for the site www.charlestonfishingguide.com i mean its the url and the name of the charter service. The sticker on my brother's car says "Charleston Fishing Guide"
The fact that the ip is from my area makes me wonder. Is "Charleston Fishing Guide" not the correct listing for this site? if any odp editors are reading this, I could really use some feedback

I'm no expert in ODP at all. In fact, it's fair to say that I don't even think about it from one day to the next but...
Looking at your site, it seems blatantly obvious to me that the previous title of "Charleston Fishing Guide" was the right one.
I am at a total loss to imagine why it's been changed. I hope you get to the bottom of it as clearly it should not have been changed.

Thanks mazy,
I hope that a competitor hasnt become an editor, but I cant see someone being that way.
Im just happy to see that at least one person doesnt think im crazy, I would really like an odp editor to read my post and let me know if i am justified, ive read the odp guidelines, and believe i am correct.

Hi rmridgew,
Listing entries by the name of the guide would help separate individual guides against sites offering general information or booking facility for a range of operators.
Looking over your site, I couldn't find reference to other guides, and it provided more information about your charter rather than the state of fishing in the area in general. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course! This would probably explain why your title was changed, however; to place your site on the same level as other guides.
The editor who changed your site is an experienced ODP editor who manages the entire Regional/ section, so I doubt it was a competitor. Of course, I'm not an editor in that cat so please don't take what I've said as gospel; but this would be my guess.
Warmest regards,
Kaj

good point and if the playing field were truelly being leveled I would be more than happy to agree with you, however there are other guides in the directory that are not listed under their name but by the name of their charter service ie: www .fishcall. com is not listed under Captain JR Waits, and the listing for www .spottails. com is listed under "south carolina flyfishing", and also other guides who do not have a charter name have other keywords added to their title. ie: "captain rick hiotts inshore fishing charters" how about "Charleston Fishing Guide Service"
i would be happy if the same guidelines behind my change were implemented with all the guides pages in the directory
its nice to get some clarification, thanks for checking into it for me kaj
by the way you have a great looking site

Sure I sleep. I just forget to close my eyes and stop working when I'm doing it. Anyway, I'm told all the world's best tyrants suffered the same predicament. :D

the world's best tyrants suffered the same predicament. That's not surprising. Lack of sleep can make some people pretty darn cranky.

***************************************************Jjjust wondering if that ip is the address of your ISP who hosts your domain - this could be part of the explanation if it so.

lol. See it takes a special talent to recognise that.
Kneelsit: Why on earth would your ISP make an edit?

I am a bit lost as to why it would make sense for my isp to edit my listing, are you thinking of "theme",traffic or what, but the problem has been resolved, and it was not my host....
thanks

Rm,
Glad it was resolved. I just mentioned the possibility since my own ISP caused difficulty for me by changing the machine on which my site was to another without notifying me.
Previously there was a straight DNS re-direct then it just returned a 404. Not the same thing as happened to you I know but just thought it might have been worth checking with them.
