I'd like some good referrals for software that does this one function well:
tells you what keywords people used to find your website.
I have heard of Summary, but I would like to see an overview of all the possibilities before I decide. thanks!
Mac OS 10.2.6
thanks!!!!!!!!

Hi Kevin,
I really like Awstats. It comes installed on a lot of web hosting accounts. I have it on both my servers that run Cpanel.
It gives you the most-used 1000 of all keyphrases used to get to your site.
I believe Awstats is an open source software, so that it could be installed on most any web hosting account.
Hope this helps,
Karen

Thanks Karen!
I'm bookmarking site and will check it out. I'm assuming for now it's free. I don't see price, but the guy says, if you want to send a donation or something like that.
If anyone else has a favorite, don't be shy, let know.
Take care!

Hi Kevin, we've discussed stats programs many times in here. View the "stats" forum to find them.

Where this thread is now. You can also do a search in here for the word 'stats' or 'log files' or whatever. There are thousands are software programs for tracking out there.

Hi Kevin,
I'm no expert in what is the best type of program you need but I searched for days looking for what I wanted (which included your keyword need). I either found many of the programs I viewed too expensive or complex or both.
Anyhow, I found what for me seems to be just what is needed and wanted -- I joined up with them approx. 10 days ago.
The URL is http://www.web-stat.com -- from memory you can have the program for free, pay $5 per month or $9.50 per month. I opted for the $9.50 per month deal.
Trust this helps.

Seems like a good program. However, I am looking for stats program which runs on my server and is 100% under my control rather than being located on the stats programs server.
Also, looking for one I can buy as a 1-time purchase and not pay a monthly or yearly fee. Plus, need it to work with multiple web-sites (at no extra cost), and of course a low price (Webtrends is far too costly and difficult to use/install). Any suggestions?
P.S. As the Admin suggested, I did a search for stats but found too-many non-relevant posts and nothing matching my criteria.

Yes I agree. Even at $5.00 month, the software will end up being hundred of dollars over the years.

You have to be creative in searching as it's just like a regular search engine. Try this phrase:
log files stats
it pulls up many good posts about log file stats programs.

did the search. Not extensively though, and seems that maybe Summary will work. It's flat $60.00, and seems to have a nice interface, although I have not tested it yet. Just want to make sure nothing better, free, cheaper, and it doesn't look like it.
Seems everything is way more expensive, or free with mediocre interface or bad/none support.
Again I have not tried anything yet so I don't know what I will run into.
My main need is really to check anyone who comes to my website and to know what keywords they typed into a search engine to get there.
For that pupose specifically, if anyone knows a better software at better price than Summary, let me know. thanks!!!

I've heard good things about Summary. You have to know Kevin that you get what you pay for. The internet is not unlike the real world. Everything has a price and you pay what a product is worth.

Thanks Doug:
In leu of you observant comment, what would I be missing from Summary, or not be getting as opposed to some of the higher priced options?
thanks!!!!!

Karen:
I got awstast. But I really have no idea how to install it. I'm very computer literate , but this is all Greek to me. Are there any tutorials you know of.
can you give a quick overview of what to do?
thanks!

All software is different. Most have good support for their own software so I would start there.

Doug , I don't think AWstat has support, they have a forum, but for complexity of getting set up, it may not be enough. Summary has e mail support, so maybe I will go with them just for that. What do you think?

I don't know. Ask your questions in the forum they have as I'm sure that is what it's for.

Hi Karen
I think awstats is awesome - take a look at this company and what they will charge you for
www.sitestats.com
They look very similar

Hi Gregsta,
Wow, those are hefty monthly fees.
I agree that the reports look very much like awstats. I didn't notice that they report on anything that awstats doesn't, but I didn't spend a lot of time looking.
If anyone is interested in awstats and is also looking for a web hosting account, I think awstats is usually included in accounts that are on servers running the Cpanel system.
I did not install awstats myself, it is part of the basic configuration on my servers that run Cpanel and Webhostmanager.

Hi Gregsta,
I use two dedicated servers and a reseller hosting account with another company as well.
We should probably take this discussion into e-mail. You can e-mail me at karenATkey2success.com (replace the AT with @).
Thanks,
Karen
