Is it worth paying Inktomi to try and get into MSN? $39 for a URL submission isn't too bad.

Inktomi spiders pretty regularly. I've never found that I had to pay to get in.

I agree with Bob, but, for some sites Inclusion can be an answer. Each site is unique, you evaluate and act. You evaluate the competition and you act. Inclusion is basically a solution for indexing. It guarantees you get indexed, Inclusion in and of itself won't "get you into MSN" it positions you to possibly be found, dig deep enough and you are there, you still have to optimize the site to place high enough in the results to matter.

Inktomi spider for free quite easily given you have some incoming links. Though, it can take some times, and as the price for inclusion is low, I dont bother and pay for my clients most of the time.

If/when MSN decides to display all overture links (instead of only three), it will devalue the inktomi PFI as this would only push inktomi listings further down on MSN. And as noted, Inktomi has been doing some great free crawling as of late.

What % of the search engine market does Inktomi actually have as opposed ot say google anyway?

Sam, be aware that Inktomi PFI only includes the specific page(s) you submit. $40 only gets you one page. The PFI spider does not crawl other pages from a site - just the ones that are paid for.

Jon, it is hard to say for certain. There are some marketing companies that try to measure it from time to time, but according to my referrer logs for my B2B site, very little traffic comes from Ink (less than 1%). YMMV

Ink provides results to MSN, overture, hotbot, gator ....I would think their marketshare is higher than 1 percent no?

Seb, probably, but not for my site. I've got a couple of page 2 SERPs on MSN (would be page 1 if not for Overture and L$) for high ranking Inktomi results and I don't see much traffic from them. Of course, MSN may not be the best engine for driving B2B traffic (or perhaps its just my particular industry - that's why any market share #s should be taken with a grain of salt). I am hard pressed to remember any traffic from any of Inktomi's other syndication partners.

Yes you are right cause for some sites I optimize MSN visitors represent 7% of SE visits. Most are french websites though.
