How useful is it to have a link in the Joe Ant directory? I can't say I've seen it in any Google backward links list.

The backlinks depend in which topic you are listed. Only pages with a PR4 or higher will give you a backlink.

But we offer more than just a small raise of your PR:
We are spidered by the big search engines, and we also give you direct hits.
See for example: http*//extremetracking.com/open;ref2?login=toolstac

I would agree and say that a link is good and shouldn't be gotten for PR alone by any means, but since PR is mentioned, not just PR4 and above links are used by Google. All of them are used in the calculation for a page, it's just that Google only displays backlinks of PR4 or higher. The others are calculated in but not displayed when Google is used to display links to a site, so as far as PR is concerned, even a PR 2 or 3 is beneficial.

Google backwards link results are flaky at best right now. They do not necessarily even show backlinks with PR 7. The links are definately in the index.

Does that mean Google perhaps has found, and is counting, more links than show up in the Googlebar?

Google counts everything they find. They simply don't show you everything.

Does that mean the "invisible" links may count towards your pagerank?

Yes. Any link that Google knows about (that is not penalized to a PR 0) will transfer some PR to your page.

okay, I'm starting to understand this a lot better. I'm using Zeus and soliciting links a lot faster than I could before. If you're familiar with it, it builds a database generated link directory with individual pages for individual categories. I'm worried that these individual pages will take a lot of time to gain any pagerank. I've been looking at the people who have just reciprocated links to me, and a lot of those link pages have little or no pagerank, so I can't expect them to do me much good (as mine won't be doing them much good for now).

How does it work? As my site gains some rank, how much of that carries over to the other pages on the site? Right now, only one of my secondary pages is showing any rank at all. Does that just mean it's the only page Google has spidered yet?

One site who just linked to me really knocked my socks off. Their link page has a pagerank of 5, or is it 4? It's in a frame. http://www.kcnativecommunity.org/ click on "links" My link is at the bottom.

Is a single links page more useful than multiple pages for this reason?

<disclosure>I have been an editor for a few months now</disclosure>

I have found that joeant not only drives traffic but from multiple sources. What I have found in my log files is traffic from other listings in the directory that show my site as a related link.

I think it is worth trying, and it can be free as well if you sign up as an editor.

These extra links are on our info pages. There you can also find the referrals to that topic. If you link back to a specific JoeAnt topic all topics where the referral goes get a link back to your site. With it becoming increasingly difficult to get listed in Open Directory (DMOZ), I'd say that it is definately worth it to get listed in JoeAnt whether you pay the one time fee or become an editor and add your own site. It is a quality link that will help your Link Popularity overall. If you do not want to be an editor, the one one time fee of $39.99 is really not bad at all.

There are only three main directories that I know of besides DMOZ, JoeAnt being one and GoGuides.org and Gimpsy being the other two. I think it is important to any SEM campaign to get listed in all three of these.
