Good news for those who like using the Overture Search Term Suggestion tool.

I asked why it hasen't been updated in awhile since it's displaying June Search results.

Here was the response in my Inbox today.

We apologize for the delay with the Search Term Suggestion Tool update. Please note, we anticipate having the most recent data available by the end of the week. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced as the result of the delay.

Oh yeah!

If you haven't tried this yet check it out at

Hi k-sea, Sorry to burst your bubble but I can't recommend that tool for serious keyphrase research. Use Google Adwords or Wordtracker for that, or hire someone who does NOT use the overture tool.

Thanks but no thanks Doug. Here's the skinny

So what you're saying, overture can't track what words are being searched on through their network, and how often?

What I'm looking for here is "total times" each word is searched on. Neither Google or word tracker provide this information. Isn't that what you should really be looking at.

If you're looking to use PPC advertising through the Overture network you're going to use a Google key word tracker for what? tell you what words there are out there? Get a Thesaurus!

Just kidding I think they all have a place in this game... Here's what I mean.

Looking at one term and seeing what the first 10 displayed terms are.

Overture tracking

Searches done in June 2003
Count Search Term
48414 snowboarding
4001 snowboarding picture
2714 snowboarding magazine
1791 equipment used for snowboarding
1657 snowboarding resort
1256 snowboarding game
1231 transworld snowboarding
1203 snowboarding and gear
696 snowboarding and wallpaper
645 snowboarding and video

Google top ten for snowboarding as an example
1snowboarding
2snowboarding pictures
3transworld snowboarding
4snowboarding pics
5supreme snowboarding
6snowboarding wallpaper
7snowboarding videos
8snowboarding gear
9forum snowboarding
10history of snowboarding

Here is wordtracker

Related keywords for snowboarding
Why do I need related keywords? Click here
1. snowboarding
2. snowboard
3. skiing
4. ski
5. snow
6. snowboards
7. winter
8. boarding
9. snowboarder
10. resorts

I'll bet on what I can track!

Track the ROI up front if you can

1657 searches on snowboarding resort will net me 82 clicks at .05% and 2 sales at .03% of those 82 clicks

This is an example. %'s and shiz are made up.

Hi Casey,

The Overture tool combines singular and plural search results together. It also incorporates automated searches IIRC, so the results may be skewed.

You can run an adwords ad at minimum cost for one day (or more depending upon your budget and need) to get real search numbers for Google which can be extrapolated to Yahoo and other Overture partners.

I believe that Wordtracker extrapolates the search frequency of terms from one or two meta search engines to determine search frequency across different search engines.

So you see, there really is no 100% accurate method for determining the actual search frequency for a particular term on the entire Overture network.

Casey,

Well said... and that is what makes my job fun and interesting. The best way to find out is put some money in the system and test both ov and google. Use the same keywords and watch. My experiece show that each product is unique, each web site is unique, each ad is unique. We have had tremendous success on keywords that didnt show much traffic and flopped on terms that showed much traffic. It comes down to money. How much are you willing to bid on a keyword phrase.
