I'm having problems with a host being down, and some of my domains being offline. To prevent this in the future I am thinking about setting up redundant web sites on servers at another host. Then using Zoneedit to automaitcally go to the backup server if the primary one at my main host is down. I don't know anything about DNS. And I don't really have time to learn.

My main question is whether using Zoneedit to go to a backup host would be harmful to my search engine rankings? I need the advice from somone who knows a lot more about DNS stuff than I do. Is using Zoneedit compatible with good Google rankings?

I've used both zonedit.com & mydomain.com previously, when I used to host with a company that always seemed to be down. I still had ranks in the top 10 on my keyword terms. Using zonedit or mydomain has NOTHING to do with your ranks and in no way, affects them.

You can do a round robin in DNS (which is a loop) and whenever one host is unreachable, it will cycle to the next IP in the loop where your site will show.

When you own a few servers (like I do) and want to have one site always available, you can do a round robin in DNS between servers (I am doing this with three of my sites now) and it doesn't affect the way your site is indexed, or where it shows up in the SERPs.

Good Luck. :)
