Hello AndrewB,
Ninemsn looks have similar algorithm with Google. I have impressed that ninemsn still have limited capacity in deep crawling submitted pages.
I would suggest put more attention to have quality content first.
You may optimise the title tags.
Inbound links currently becomes a critical points for high ranking position in Google, but still not really an issue for ninemsn.

Hi "AndrewB",
I have to say that MSN's "search" per se is changing regularly ( note that they are now posting at the footer of every search page a "we are hiring" link ) as they try to get a technology and algorythm that works.
If history has taught us anything about Microsoft, it is that they do not Inovate, they merely Imitate, but the Imitate better in many cases than the original * grin *
So yes, MSN's search.msn.com will in time be a force to reacon with, but for now, it's a joke - search for "linux" for example, it used to give 14 results, now it's something like 140 or so, which is pretty sad to say the least!
Hell, even a hard case like me with pocket change can handle providing around 2,300+ results for "linux" and thats just fron *.au sites !!
Cheers,
Dez

NineMSN:
Pay NineMSN to be a "Featured Site" (VERY expensive)
Pay LookSmart to get a LookListing (PPC that is based upon "clusters" of keywords taht you purchase, as a group, at a negotiated PPC).
Inktomi natural rankings: Study how to rank well foir free in Inktomi, or pay for URLK inclusion into Inktomi (US$39 per year), or use a trusted feed (http://www.inktomi.com/products/web_search/connect.html). This is more for larger sites with frequently changing content, and only Decide Interactive is located in Australia, although there may be others that offer the service.
In general, the best way to rank well as of thursday (when the "WEB DIRECTORY SITES" layer, that I left out of teh above list necause it comes out tomorrow, and is currently LookSmart "SmartListings") will be to do well in Inktomi. You can check your results in Hotbot, but essential Inktomi likes:
Trusted Feed sites (they usually get a bit ofa boost, AFAIK)
Meta data (Title, description and keywords)
Content (the actual words on a page)
Link Pop
It is more like an old skool SE than Google, with off-page and link stuff not quite as important.
So, if you site does well in Google, it will probably do well in Inktomi, so long as you rank well in Google because of content and not links. There are many times when the two disagree on what exactly is spammy content, with Inktomi sometimes tougher, and Google sometimes tougher.
In general, the basics of SEO apply, and as long as you have a site which follows the basics, you will do well on Inktomi and Google.

a little off thread but you might find it rather amusing that after three "yea, I'd like to be interviewed for your jobs working on the MSN search engine" emails and letters..
well, I've heard nothing back.. and the last one included a link to http://WebSearch.COM.AU to demonstrate that I'd had a little ( ten years or more ) experience designing, writing, building, maintaining and managing a search engine * grin *
so I wonder what the criteria are for qualifying as a MSN Search developer as clearly it's not currently including "having run your own successful search engine for almost ten years" hee hee..
* sigh *
guess I'll have to keep working hard here at http://CradleTechnologies.COM
