Across the Web, everyone seems so focused on Google's PageRank algorithm. Not surprisingly, there is little discussion of optimizing a website for Teoma.

I'm not predicting the demise of Google any time soon, but when doing topical research, my wife and I have started replacing my Google preference and her Yahoo preference with Teoma for more relevant results.

With that in mind, does anybody have any thoughts on what one would do differently to attract high rankings in Teoma?

Not anything different. Just focus on getting inbound links from pertinent themed/portal sites.

You can read more about Teoma's technology (http://sp.teoma.com/docs/teoma/about/searchwithauthority.html) on their site.

A quote:

Instead of ranking results based upon the sites with the most links leading to them, Teoma analyzes the Web as it is organically organized—in naturally-occurring communities that are about or related to the same subject—to determine which sites are most relevant. Teoma is the only search technology that can locate communities on the Web within their specific subject areas, as they actually exist. And this allows us to finely tune our search process, providing more precise results.

Relevant links do matter to Teoma- they use a process that analyzes who-links-to-whom to to build "communities" that help them determine relevance for any particular query.

It's somewhat similar to the Google LocalRank patent, which hasn't been implemented yet it seems. That patent technology would resort the results based on who had links within the search results.

I think relevant links are going to be more and more important very soon. Linking to a bunch of off-topic sites will confuse the Teoma algo and reduce your ranking for relevant topics. Reciprocal linking and buying links from off-topic but high PR sites are likely to lose all their power.

I have been using Teoma a lot more lately depending on the search. If I was looking for information and plan on going to more than 1 site than Teoma IMO, though smaller, does provide many good references. But if I were searching for a snippet of javascript for a specific task well Google is far and away the best choice.

I see shifting from express inclusion at yahoo to ppc as an significant advantage for teoma. They are the only se with great relevance. any differing opinions?

For my own searching, I find Teoma is a great complement to Google when I want to delve more deeply. AllTheWeb has some neat stuff too.

However if I was thinking of which search engines my website should be optimized for, then it's a question of how much traffic they will bring me. Here it takes me all my time to think just about Google, Yahoo! (whatever that is) and Micro$oft.

The same optimization works for teoma. My intention was to get the better rankings at google and msn(yahoo used google results). But, the pages have been doing great at 'ask' also.

Relevant on-topic links are always a good thing. ;)
