Description tag and Meta tag limits

Do search engines have a maximum number of words and/or characters allowed for these search areas?

Nothing set in stone. Keep all tags short and simple. Each page has their very own set of tags depending on the content of that page.

as a general rule I use these figures for metas,

title - 60 char(or lower)

description - 255 char(or lower)

keywords - 400 char(or lower)

But Doug is right, nothing is set in stone but some search listings still use the title, description tag for the results so creating a precise and ledgable tag is more important these can show well in SE's (that support desc tags)...Any longer that those figures and it starts getting a little daft, short and simple as per the previous recommendation...
