Well, I've about had all I can take with Via Networks. The first year they hosted one of my sites I had no problems. But for the last six or seven months I've had to call them (not toll-free) on average about three times a week.

There are problems with my business site that they've never bothered fixing --FTP is incredibly slow, and the free stats program they "upgraded" me to has never worked for more than a couple of days without just stopping. The site I run for a friend of mine is having serious problems today (the FP extensions have gone bad and reinstalling them apparently didn't help), and they have apparently given up on trying to fix it before "some time tomorrow morning". Some time tomorrow morning Georgia time means I've lost the morning and most of the afternoon in western Europe, where about half of my traffic comes from.

I need about 100 MB of space on a Win server with absolute total, full and guaranteed support of all FP 02 server extensions: forms, search, includes, the whole shebang.

Either that, or I need to be weaned of this FP thing and shown how I can do everything I need to do without it.

And another thing -- it would be nice if I could get PHP and MySQL so I could finally ditch the absolutely awful forum software I have to use on that site.

Bob, you can get FP server extensions on an Apache/Linux box also. That is what I had with Lenz. I could do everything FP except have a .htaccess file and FP server extensions at the same time. I believe that had to do with how FP server extensions were implemented on Apache by that host.

In general it would be a good idea to wean yourself off FP specific stuff as that broadens the scope of your design work.

I do my WYSIWYG stuff in FP cos I am more comfy with it. Then switch to Visual InterDev for the programming.

Lately I have been using HTML-Kit + PHP-Coder +DBG as I am developing an online application using php & MySQL. It was tough to switch but it has given me a whiff of what it feels like to be independent of M$ software. And I am really liking it. :)

I am not sure this helps but there are reasonably cheap hosts who should be able to give you FP server extensions on an Apache/Linux box. Check out webhostingtalk for feedback on hosts.

Thanks. I'll look into it. But I used to run an FP site that was hosted on a Unix server with a promise of support for FP server extensions. When our forms stopped working and they couldn't figure out the problem, they kind of changed their definition of support: they offered to support it, but if it didn't work, it wasn't their problem. In other words, "support" didn't mean any assurance that it would work

So we switched to Windows hosting. Since then, I've been a bit nervous about the thought of sticking an FP site on a Unix box.

Bob,

Have you ever looked at www.infinology.net? I have several accounts there personally and several clients hosting with them now. I went over there during the GoDaddy fiasco and have been quite pleased with the services and customer service. Everything I do is windows based with FP extensions.

vBulletin, One app with 10 MySQL databases, PHP -- I am doing about all of it over there. My database guy says it is the most robust host and easy CP he has dealt with.

If you do some digging, you will find some complaints on them but I have not experienced any probs at all.

BTW, no affilliation.

Thanks Andy. I'll take a look. Another one to add to my short list.

My servers run FrontPage/5.0.2.2634a for apache which is the latest build. We are adoment about keeping up with the latest security and bug fixes with all server installed software.

Very bad thing the other hosting comapny did to you. Have you tried PHPBBS or Invision BBS? Both are php/mysql based and I do believe you can download cross-over scripts to convert current major BBS builds.

My lowest package plan runs $3.95 for 350 megs and 1gig of bandwidth. Would that fit your current needs? All features are unlimited. Your just paying for the space and bandwidth as features such as email, databases cost me nothing. It only consumes your alloted space and bandwidth.
