The pagerank does not mean anything, the toolbar just approximates.

I have seen at least 3 people this past week saying this.

I have noticed on several forums, that immediatelly you start a new thread, you can see a pagerank for this brand new page. therefore I believe that it just approximates. I am starting this thread and ....

... 1 second after posting, i can see pagerank 1 at my toolbar. For most sites, the toolbar GPR is updated ones in a couple of weeks. I do not believe that G updated database immediatelly after I made this post:)
Conclusion -> the toolbar approximates (probably for some tipe of dynamical pages only)

For new pages, the toolbar generally approximates a PR based on the page's position within a site and the PR of pages that hold a similar position.

I used to believe that too and in fact, one year ago this was absolutely true.
However, due to some discussion in another thread, i created a new page on my site (a pure static HTML page) and to my surprise the page got a PR0

I'd come to the conclusion that there is some sort of inheritance factor going on. So that if the page is linked to by a PR 6, it might inherit some of that and pick up a 2-3 PR. I’ve seen this in my owe directory structures and played with it a bit. By creating links from higher level pages, the internal pages seem to benefit than if linked to by lower rank pages.

There also seems to be a bleed-off. Like if a PR 6 home links to directory/page.html, that page might get a 2-3 out of it. But if that page then links to directory/subdirectory/page.html, it might only get a 1 and then from that point on it is a zero.

This of course would correlate strongly with the fact that internal linking structures are critical, not only to an SE finding a page, but also determining it’s importance. Interestingly enough, the PR of sub-pages seems to jump a bit after a few days. Like a subpage will start at 2-3 and then move to 3-4 after a Google index. That however, is just my observation and the only based on rather unscientific methods.

And what did you hope it have to receive??? It will and MUST be PR0 till the next Google update ;)

Hope ? Nothing but an additional explanation why pages can show a PR without showing up in the SERP's.

BTW, personally i don't care about PR. The only thing i'm really interested in, is the site's rankings for its keywords.
On the other hand, a high PR is interesting to have a others link to the site. Some people hesitate to exchange links with PR3 (or less) pages.
Hmmm, PR mania it is ! ;)
