Has anyone tested the CTR results from a leaderboard vs a skyscraper ad? I know we cannot discuss actual numbers, and CTR depends a lot on the individual site, but I'm wondering if anyone has found a significant difference in results - all the "expert" Adsense advice I've read has said to use vertical ads, but nobody offers any "proof" that this is true (I do plan on testing myself, but I am curious).

It seems to me that can only be tested on a particular page. Each site/page would reveal different results. It's not an either/or type thing. MUCH depends on the page the ads are shown. Actually, most would depend on that. One page's vertical is another pages horizontal.

Yes, it would depend very much on page design. I generally find skyscrapers more annoying, which suggests they probably work better - but I'd be interested in your source for this.

If I were an advertiser, I suspect I'd not be so keen on skyscrapers, as the fella at the top has the penthouse, and probably gets all the business.

Thanks, I know it is an individual thing, but in looking for advice on how to increase Adsense CTR, all the info I found mentioned to use a vertical ad, not to test to find out (so maybe these are not really experts after all) and it made me curious as to why this statement was so widespread, with no findings to back it up. Or maybe there were findings I did not know about.

If there are any specific results out there, even for individual pages, I'm still curious.

I'll also post my findings when I have them.

Simply have your page displayed one way for one week, then have the same page displayed the other way for the next week, and you shall find out which is best for that page. Easy. :)
