What is the best wording to use for page titles? Should it be the name of the site, i.e. Mary's Bakery, or should it be "fresh, baked cakes and pastries - Mary's Bakery"?

Also should each page within a site have a different page title?

TIA

IMO the page title sets the stage for the page content so in this case it would be:

"Freshly baked cakes and pastries from Mary's Bakery" (Written for the visitor not the SE)

(Or along that theme)

And yes, the title should be different on each page (in most cases anyway because the content/subject is different)

Thanks -- that's what I thought but wanted to be sure :)

As Daminc stated, the second option is by far the better title. This is true for both the visitors as well as the SEs. The title is the most weighted element of on-page content for the primary SEs (e.g. Google, Yahoo!, etc.) and having the keywords/phrases within is crucial.

Like so many things, there are limits and much of that is discussed at length through these forums. You may want to determine the most sought after keywords/phrases directly related to your business website by either: purchasing Wordtracker or visiting the Digital Point Keyword Suggestion Tool (http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/).

Now there are multiple people who post on this forum who strongly believe the Overture numbers are completely inaccurate. I will only comment on that to say you may want to stay with Wordtracker numbers for a period of time to compare your results with those of Wordtracker (either purchase or free tool at DP) to determine how this works for you personally.

There are already a number of thread posts regarding Wordtracker vs. Overture on this forum so a little research here may assist you in your endeavors. :hi:

The title is very important from SEO point of view, so you should include the main search phrase(s) in the title, but without making it just a string of words that are meaningless for the user. Bear in mind that Google take into account only the first 80 characters or so.

The title should be different on each page. The title should really be a brief outline of the main thrust of the page. Having the same title on every page is not good for SEO nor is it good for usability.

I try to get three items into the TITLE tag (and there's enough characters to do that ..)

1. the site title,
2. the page title, and, where this is different ...
3. key words for that page.

"Greatest Hits [2] from Chuck Berry Forever [1] featuring My Dingaling [3]"

Not that I have a Chuck Berry page, but it is a fact that My Dingaling was his greatest hit. Shame!

Not his "greatest" hit, but perhaps his most purchased, or most played on the radio, or most highly ranked in the charts. Yes, a big 'ol shame what a thoughtless industry can do.

Ok, so page title should not stay the same for your other pages?

For example I have noticed my compeitors using less keywords and less descriptions.

So for example.

The title should change for eage page that incerts a different topic? But keeping the keywords the same?

Thanks for you advice.

As with the Title, the keywords should reflect the page content. So, if the page is about a different subject the keywords should be different (as well as a modified description tag)
