My husband also will eat it on occasion. Same way, fried. I can't imagine how anyone could eat it straight outta the can. It's all slimey and gross. Fried, it's not much difference than bacon or something. Still, it grosses me out to much...I won't eat it. I think you had to grow up eating it (which I didn't!).

I think it tastes quite different from bacon with a more tangy kind of taste. Of course, it's nothing but the left over parts of pigs and who knows what else. :D

It's pink, and slimey, and about 90% fat!

Very gross to look at raw. But sliced and cooked, not so gross.

LOL - I noticed that no one from the UK posted in this thread. I may be wrong but isnt spam-in-a-can almost the national food in the UK?

I used to live in Hawaii, AND, believe it or not, Hawaii consumes more SPAM alone than the rest of the world combined!!!

I had it a couple time hanging out with some Hawaiian locals, with eggs, and at the cafeteria occasionaly.

Pretty greasy, it tasted good, but would usually give me a stomach-ache if I ate too much of it..

I found a link to a spam-apple quiche recipe:http://www.khon.com/hi_kitch/2001/hk032501.asp

yum. The recipe sounds tasty. I really do like it but can't say much what it looks like raw and what it may be made out of. :D

This one doesn't sound very tasty though:

I am from the UK and confirm without fear of contradiction that no one eats spam here. The national dish of the UK is, in fact, curry (in the sense that more curries are consumed here than any other dish).

Little bit of historical data. After WWII when we (the UK) had rationing, there wasn't a lot of meat around, so some bright spark came up with a cheap, off-cuts alternative called spam that didn't use up too many coupons. Consequently, spam was a popular foodstuff through the late Forties and into the early '50s. It wasn't beef and Yorkshire pudding, but you got what you could at the time. And just remember, we won that war !!!!

LOL - I guess I had some really outdated info on the Palate of the UK residents.

Yep, my family thought it was a riot seeing spam on the menu everywhere in Hawaii :green: (We didn't order any!)

Just to clarify (and correct me if I'm wrong Mark) that curry is the slang term for Asian takeaways in the UK - not just curries of the Indian or Thai kind, but Chinese takeout etc.

As for spam, not even Monty Python could make that stuff appealing. Nothing but salty fat (or is that fatty salt)? The national dish of Australia is probably a traditional aussie BBQ (steak, chops, prawns, sausages, grilled onions, salad and lots of beer)

Spam is a synthetic version of meat. Looks like a baby pig that wasn't carried to term.....if you get my meaning....yuck! Too werid looking to stick in my mouth.

Too werid looking to stick in my mouth. Hmm...well if we all used that logic we'd never, umm...oh well, never mind.

Now, now girls, you'll get me all hot and bothered.

Kal, I'm afraid I will have to correct you. Curry refers to , uh, curry. In this case meaning Indian curry. The cultural influence of first generation Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi immigrants and their British offspring cannot be overestimated, despite what the right wing in this country think. If it means that the UK is known as a nation of curry lovers rather than spam-mers it can't be bad, can it ?

Oh God yes. Vegemite toast and boiled eggs for breakfast is a must. Although I must say I prefer Promite these days (vegetable extract rather than yeast extract as Vegemite is). Have you ever tried Vegemite Jill??

Nope, never tried Veggie Mite. We had a friend from Australia though, which is how I knew about it!

Interestingly, Spam in the US is made and tastes entirely different from UK Spam (as do Baked Beans). UK Spam is condemned by the US Food and Drink Administration as Unfit for Human consumption - along with Wall's sausages (or any other British 'banger'), faggots and black pudding.

When I lived in the US, I had visitors smuggle the 'real' thing in - or you could find some under-the-counter UK food stuffs at certain shops (if you knew the owners well) and had the dough!

"Pssst - I've just got some Cumberland sausage in...." ;)
