Usually(now anyway) I visit other forums in search of information, and then come back to this forum to ask you fellows/fellowettes your opinions.

Where SEs get their information. Google is the "backdoor" to yahoo. I have read that dmoz.org is one of the main "suppliers" of information to SE's. This person I talked to said if you were to get listed in this directory you would also be listed in ALOT of search engines. If this is so, then who should I really be submiting to in order to get listed?

Oh boy. A huge question. :)

If you submit to DMOZ:

get into AOL Directory
get into Netscape Directory
get into Google Directory
get into other smaller engines who use the DMOZ database

If you submit to Yahoo:

get into Yahoo Directory only
NO backdoors are available

If you submit to Looksmart:

get into Looksmart Directory
get into MSN first results pages(if available)
get into Excite Directory
get into AltaVista Directory
influences link popularity for most engines

If you submit to Google:

get in if you have one good link somewhere
get into the Yahoo secondary search results (Yahoogle)
get into secondary results in Netscape
get into secondary results of many smaller engines who use Google's database

If you submit to Inktomi:

get into the secondary results of MSN
get into the secondary results of AOL
get into the secondary results of Hotbot
get into the secondary results of Looksmart
get into many other smaller engines results who use the Ink database

The list above was done VERY quick. I know I left out some things. This is the basic list however.

DMOZ is important to be in but I would Not call them a "main supplier" of the other SE's.

Google is extremely important but they are not a "backdoor" to Yahoo. The Yahoo directory comes up first in their results. Then, they default to Google results, which are Not Yahoo.

Well, I had no idea that it was this complex. And I thank you for this "basic" list for it will help me save alot of time in the future.

Geez Doug did you write all that from memory? If so that's pretty impressive.

Google is extremely important but they are not a "backdoor" to Yahoo.

It appears that my comrade was mis-informed, and in turn mis-informed me! :D

Of course from memory but understand there are MANY other things involved and Many other feeds from one engine to another.

This was a VERY quick overview only. Though I believe it is all correct, should not be the absolute so maybe others can add to the list. My brain is slow moving this morning. Plus, I am tired.

Looks good at first glance...

I think some misstate the backdoor inclusion because Yahoo will use Google for secondary search results. However, it's not really in the Yahoo directory...so it really didn't enter through any backdoor. Sure it's possible to get good traffic from a [Google only] Yahoo listing...but in reality it's not much different then a meta search presenting results from another engine. The other backdoor I hear about, is getting into some of the less popular regional listings...but in reality there is not a back door for inclusion into the main Yahoo database.
