The most popular search engine in the Mainland China (for this purpose Taiwan and Hong Kong are not included) is baidu.com, which even beats google.com. Most recently, sohu.com, one of the leading portals, launched its own search engine sogou.com.
Both baidu.com and sogou.com have their own spiders and they do index English sites and it is free to submit one's sites. Yet as far as I know they only index the home page for English-only sites.

I know that Google and Yahoo have interests in China; do they work under their own banners, or have they got local partnerships?
Also, I know this is a fast-changing area - could you list the top 4 or 5 SEs? It would be useful - and useful to compare in a few months time!

Google has a simplified Chinese version - www.google.com/intl/zh-CN/ for the mainland market and Yahoo has recently launched yisou.com for the Chinese. Google also holds shares in baidu.
At this moment, the top 2 SEs in China should be:-
1. baidu.com
2. google.com
Yisou.com and sogou.com are rather new. It appears to me that it will take some time for them to challenge the dominance of baidu.com.
zhongsou.com is a rather marginalised Chinese SE.
