Hello Everyone,

My name is Gary and this is my first post. I was reading another
post before deciding to start another even though the subjects
are the same.

According to my receipt I signed up for one year subscription to
Inktomi Search Engine for $39.00 on December 27th 2001.

I just checked my account status and it's included but has "0"
hits in 3 weeks?

I certainly haven't signed any affiliates with that keycode so I
guess no hits would make sense. Does this place really exist or
did I just get taken?

I can't keep money in my PayPerClicks so how come no action
here? This dosen't look good.

How old is this Search Engine? I hope it's new at least that
would explain the lack of hits.

Welcome to the forums Gary! :hi:

You paid for the "inclusion" into the Inktomi database only. This does not mean that your site will come up on search results. You have to be optimized to do that.

Try typing your domain into the MSN.com search engine to see if you are there. Also, who did you buy from? Inktomi has different partners set up to take payments for Url's. Depending on which partner you used, they can tell you whether or not you are in the database now.

Remember you paid for inclusion only. No guarantee of getting hits.

Yep, once again, Doug is right! Being in Inktomi because you paid, is a far cry from being found in Inktomi because you optimized. You have to first optimize your site for your keyphrases. But don't worry, you've come to the right place. All the info you need to do that is right here on these forums. And it's not too late either because Inktomi will spider your page every 48 hours. So, sit back, relax, and start reading. Then start making the appropriate changes to your site. If you pay close attention, learn a lot and figure out how to make the right changes, you'll eventually have some success!

Good luck! We're here if ya need us!

Hi Gary & welcome :hi:

Just to clear something up: Inktomi is not a search engine. They are developers of search technology and creators of a major database of web sites that is fed to major search engines and directories to complement their own results.

It is fairly critical to be included in Inktomi's database as you will then appear on their partner engines. These partners currently include: AOL, iWon, About.com, MSN & HotBot. There are probably a couple I've left out but my fellow members will point them out I'm sure ;)

Hope this helps

Hmm.. I got a little confused.. So if you submit to MSN you also submit to Inktomi and all the other search engines or is MSN and the others buying the service from inktomi? So the best way to get into all those SE is to only submit to inktomi?

Im going to submit my site soon so i need to get thinks as clear as possible :)

You don't actually submit to MSN. You get in there through Inktomi and LookSmart.

I have an article that somewhat untangles which engines use which databases, which may be of interest to you:

http://www.workz.com/content/2437.asp

Hmm...I don't think I ever put that article up on my own site...gotta do that. It may be slightly out of date as it was written over the summer, but I think it's close to accurate still.

There are four ways to get into the Inktomi database.

#1. Pay for each Url you submit thru www.positiontech.com or thru www.ineedhits.com . There are other partners, but I do not know them off hand.

#2. Get in for free. There is an "add url" thread in here somewhere that lists all the inktomi partners where you can submit your page for free.

#3. Simply do nothing. The Inktomi spider will eventually find you if you have a link on another page somewhere that is also in the database. My favorite.

#4. Pay to get into the Looksmart directory. This assures that the page you pay for in LS will also be included in the Inktomi main database.

I do both #3 and #4.

Here is the thread for Inktomi add url's for free and others:
http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/t40/s.html

Please note, to submit your url for free like this, you must have at least one good link coming to your page from another page that is already in the Ink database. If not, you may be in for a week or so, but then will drop out.

Just thought I'd add to Kal's list with another search engine that uses Inktomi: NineMSN http://search.ninemsn.com.au/ It's basically an Australian version of the MSN Search.
