Does anyone know if a listing on LookSmart Australia would appear on any of the LookSmart network (apart from the Australian sites)? Say on msn or AltaVista? I can't seem to find any information on this...although on LookSmart Australia they only seem to mention Australian partner sites...

Many thanks,
sanity ;)

I am truly not sure sanity but I think if a site is submitted to LS US then it will appear in the others. If submitted outside of US, I don't think it does this. Not sure though.

One of my sites was submitted to L$ US and was listed in L$ AU, So I would guess that it works the other way as well.

Hi there - Doug's right about this - LS AU listings appear on the Australian network, but not the US one. However, LS US listings do appear in the Australian network, as lotsOcash noted.

Speaking of LS Australia, I'll be posting some info on their new Zeal AU directory (and the Canada one, too) in a li'l bit...stay tooned.

:hi:

Thanks everyone for your replies.

If the client is prepared to pay I think it may often be more beneficial submitting to the US LookSmart. (FYI Submitting to LS US is about AU $600 and sbmitting to the Australian LookSmart is AU$300.) It gets the site into more partner sites and apart from a few Australian sites most people seem to use US search engines/directories anyway.

Good point sanity! Even if you are an australian site, it certainly seems money better spent to submit to LS US only. Unless, of course, your whole market is local only, then it really does not matter.

LOL Doug :p

You are a funny one;)

I agree with you re LS US. As I said we do not have too many really popular SE's and Directories Down Under. Although LS was actually developed in Melbourne (Australia!!) by two Aussies so I guess that's something.

Hey doug--you had to post your response twice for your own sanity :p

But I do agree... the money is better spent on submitting to LS US...the purpose behind submitting a website (in my opinion) is so your site is found....and if your site will get better (and more) exposure by being listed in the US directory...then submit it there....if you submit to the US directory, your site will appear in the AU directory...

That's a good one MsSearch :p

Actually I came up with my name one crazy day when I was needing a nickname and being driven mad by everyone around me (or so it seemed). Bingo - sanity seemed right :D

I think where at all possible I am going to suggest my clients list in the US LookSmart - seems obvious when they end up appearing in both.

I always submit UK clients to LS UK and not to Looksmart.com - as you will never get a top ranking in MSN.co.uk by submitting to LS.com as local directory sites appear before the worldwide directory sites. Furthermore, depending on your ISP and whether they feel like it or not, msn.com redirects to msn.co.uk so the benefit of submitting to the local version is clear. Plus it's cheaper.

Following up on our discussion whether it's better to post to the US or regional LS....

Looksmart guidelines state:

"Your site must be in English and be of use to an audience located in the United States. Sites not appropriate for the United States should be submitted to the LookSmart Directory covering that market. Please find a list of our global directories in the top right corner of the LookSmart homepage."

So I take it I can only submit to the US LS if it is of use to a US audience? If that's so, I also take it a property development in Melb Australia is of no use:(
