i've searched on the spanish espotting for keyword variations on 'inglés'

all their suggestions are variations of 'ingles' (no accent over the e).

i'm not sure what to read into this; is the accent effectively ignored, if so, by SEs or just espotting.

should i be optimising for inglés ingles or both?

(few spanish speakers would ever spell inglés without the accent, unless their keyboard wasn't setup for spanish and they didn't know the shortcut).

I think you answered you own question. Which demographic are you targeting, English or Spanish? If English, optimize for e. If Spanish, optimize for é.

i don't think it's english speakers that are producing the ingles results.

here's an example of the espotting results:

ingles 241257
cursos ingles 493105
curso ingles 71251
ingles inglaterra 11926
academia ingles 3963
aprender ingles 3795

no way are english speakers creating this.

ps target audience is spanish.

If the product or service you are promoting is a language course, I would use the proper spelling (with the accent). While optimizing for the unaccented spelling might bring more traffic, I would be concerned that it reflects poorly on the company given the field!
