I am just now looking at starting my own blog and making use of RSS. to link up to news feeds relevant to my theme.

I assume that I will need a reasonable grasp of PHP and some understanding of setting up a databae such as MySQL in order to even make a start - would that be correct??

Only if you are writing one from scratch. If you are setting one up to run on your own site, most of the scripts come with a install page that will set up the database, you just design the templates.

A quick way though, is to sign up at blogger.com or bloglines.com, set up a user, set up your template and set it to publish to a folder on kneelsit. You simply need to provide FTP details to the software so it can put the files on your site.
It should be able to integrate into your layout as well.
