View Full Version : Need something like Urchin

My old web host provided Urchin and I think I'm going through withdrawals now. I miss the ability to scale the stats over any time period I wish.

My current host offers Awstats and Webalizer, but AFAICT, they only track from the beginning of the month to date or for prior months, but no ability to drill down to specific days or a range of days.

I've dl'd the freeware version of FunnelWeb and started looking at it, but I haven't figured out yet if it is possible to generate reports for date ranges or not. Anyone know?

Any other suggestions (short of buying Urchin)?

With FunnelWeb, you can pick a set of log files you want analyzed. It could be 1, it could be many. You can drag and drop the log files into FunnelWeb and it will analyze just those.

I noticed that, but that means I'll have to manually split my log files into sections to achieve my goal. That's a lot of work for something that should be relatively easy for the software to accomodate!

My host breaks up my log files by the day so I haven't looked for a from/to setting.

Hey! Aren't you the guy who wrote a program to break large log files into smaller files? ;)

Yeah, but I don't fancy adding extra steps to the process!

In any event, I just found the option in FunnelWeb settings (under "Analyze") that does indeed allow one to set a date range. All is well.

There's now a free version of NetTracker called NetTracker Lite (http://www.nettrackerlite.com/) and I LOVE IT!

It takes forever to go through all of your logs for the first time, but after that (assuming you're using the same domain all the time) I think it updates itself. And it lets you drill down to a single session if you want.

Looks interesting. I'm downloading it right now. Thanks for the tip...

Bob, you have Urchin, though. ;)

Yes, and I'm liking it. It's a huge improvement over AWStats, but I still plan on running my logs through NetTracker to see what it gives me.

Besides, I want to experiment with this free version of the software. Since it only allows one profile, I think that means I'll have to delete all my data for one site before I can use it to study another, and if I want to do this for clients I'm going to have to see whether it's worth the delay. I expect I'm going to have to run through the logs over night every time I need to check a different domain.

Bernard, what OS are you running? 98? Please don't tell me you've got ME

I've got 98 and 95 on my desktop systems (because I develop software for the lowest common denominator). I've got 2000 on a laptop around here, but I don't use that for my online activities.

Bernard, if you are willing to pay a few bucks a month I know a great real time stats program. I've been using it for a while and it's cut down my time analyzing data by hours. So simple most clients can figure it out with little or no guidance. I belive it's $50 a month but for real time stats, IMO, that's a bargain.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, but for now, my needs are simple. I check my stats about once a week or so, but I like to analyze it (over different date ranges) when I do check it.
