I like to play around with software and see if I can get stuff going, I seem to do ok, I have our website running on apache, and have the email server running as well, I have managed to get mysql and php working as well tho very basic. What I would like to know about and get running is the dns server.

If I am right and I get a dns server going I can then point an ip to a directory on the hd? so if I have 3 folders each with seperate websites in each would have there own dns dname and ip address is that correct??

If I set up a DNS server how do I get it to connect with other dns servers do I have to pay or is there a central one say at ICANN or something that records all dns's?

I realise I can pay for companies to do all of the above host and dns serve but I am a curious type and like to try it all myself.

Cheers Tony

expensive operation just for the fun of it.

To run an authoritative DNS server for a domain you require at least 1 static IP, 2 are recommended, min 1/2 meg synchronous pipe, failover connection etc etc.

But if you just want to learn how it works just create yourself a local zone for an internal network.

Thanks chrishirst for your info is there any more detailed info you could give me??
Ok I have a multiple static ip's, by 1/2meg synchronous pipe do you mean a 2048/2048 connection?? or are we talking about another kind of connection ?? I don't have a failover connection but I can get 1 for around $150 a year. What I really wanted to know apart from hardware was about the connection to the internet how do I do that do I have to pay a big isp for access to there dns server or is there a free system available?? how do I get the dns's published to the net, as I said its all about learning I can cope with some costs obviously if its going to cost me 10,000 a year then its not worth the trouble but if its only a couple of hundred then its worth it for my own experience.

Cheers Tony

Ah what a fool I am, I just realised how you get dns servers to talk to each other, oh so simple and yet I missed it so sorry guys if you want to delete this thread please feel free, I feel like such an idiot now hahahahahah
