I am a CFP (certifed financial planner) and a CLU (life insurance designation) with my own business since 1990 and I tried to become an editor for DMOZ in an area that had no editor and I received an almost immediate "no thank you" e-mail. What gives? The intro info even states that people with experience in a given area would make good editors. Am I barred for life?

Welcome to the forums InsureIncome! :hi:

I have no idea about why you may of been rejected. I do know they do not want any grammar or spelling mistakes on your application. They may also believe that you were too 'close' to the category you applied for.

Others can weigh in.

I kept a copy of my submission. D'Gramma and de spellin' is a mor betta dan uzual. Too close for comfort could be the reason. So am I barred for life or should I resubmit to another category?

Yes. I am just giving reasons for a rejection. I was rejected also along time ago and probably for the reason of "too close" or something although I applied to the "affiliate program" category that had zero editors at that time, so truly no idea.

Try applying to another cat. to one that does not have as much to do with your own business.

:hi: and welcome...

There are many reasons ODP rejects editor applications...

spelling
grammar
applied for too large a category
industry affiliation
...and many others...

I wouldn't think you were 'barred' for life...you can re-apply, possibly for a smaller category or a regional one and work your way into a larger category...

There are many previous threads here offering advice on filling out DMOZ editor applications....

happy reading and good luck.

Thank you all for your input. CFP and CLU don't pass a spell checker. So that's probably the reason. I try again.

Which category are you trying to get into? List it here, and we'll make a case study out of you.

Do not re-apply yet!!!!! You are going to need some help.

Nice image. Go Guardian!

I tried Business/Insurance/AgentsandMarketers/Life. No editor in the cat.

Now I know why you got declined, you have zero chance for that category with no experience. The category is to much for a new editor to handle.

Try applying for one of the following categories next week (not now). Feel free to send me a copy of a completed application before you submit it so I can help.

http://dmoz.org/Business/Insurance/Related/
http://dmoz.org/Business/Insurance/Publications/
http://dmoz.org/Business/Insurance/Agents_and_Marketers/Flood/United_States/
http://dmoz.org/Business/Insurance/Agents_and_Marketers/Home/United_States/

If you can find four sites that would fit well into one of those categories, write some sample titles and descriptions for the sites, study up on Editor Guidelines (http://dmoz.org/help/become.html) , then submit an application. once you are an editor, then work your way up to edit something like Business/Insurance/Agents and Marketers/Life

No experience as an editor ;-) I'll wait and then consult with you before submitting. Thanks.

Do you have any tips on filling out the "become and editor" application? This is from the "editor guidelines" page. Hmmm...:D

I've applied as an editor a few times (over the years) to categories w/o an editor, but was declined each time. What is so frustrating, is that they would rather deny editors for categories that dont have one, instead, leaving the categories filled with spam and broken links.

I probably took about an hour or two with each editor application, paying close attention to grammar and spelling, but a spell check should be mandatory anyways.

BigDugan,
Make sure you apply for cats which have a very few sites. Applying for regional categories are a good way to get in.
