I'm trying to figure out "other ways" of getting into the SERPs the right way and would want to know the best way to;
1. Write press releases.
2. Get my press releases found by the major search engines quickly.
3. Keeping it there for as long as possible.
Thanks for any help guys!

Well, my kababayan, before you even begin to think about press releases you have to think about what news you have.
News that is of legitimate interest to others.
News that traditional media outlets are willing to pickup.
News that will be of legitimate interest to others.
Certainly you can hire a writer with a strong PR background who can craft a press release in a fomrat and style that is generally accepted by the media. Or, you can hire a public relations firm to write and distribute your press releases.
But realistically this has very little to do with SERPs. That is done with two things: unique content and appropriate SEO. Unique content does not just happen, and you can never have too much unique content. So adding unique content is an ongoing process.
If I were going to spend money on my site, I would put having new content written much higher than having some press releases produced.
Then, undertake some white hat SEO with the understanding that SEO is a long-term operation and there are no miracles or secret techniques to get you to the top of the rankings. I should say, no secret techniques that won't get you banned when discovered.

Hello there!
We do have a business communications person who can write the press releases that (although self-serving to a degree) would be of interest and use to actual readers.
I am trying to figure out how to leverage those press releases to get more traffic into our sites via search engines. How does Yahoo News and Google News pick up press releases?
My dilemma is of course these press releases should be timely to readers and if I rely on search engines to pick them up and showing them on the SERPs like they do with ordinary web pages, the information in the press releases might already be outdated by the time somebody gets to read them.

I seriously doubt that SEs are a viable press release dissemination strategy.
You primary target for press releases should be the media, and to reach them you need a distribution strategy. there is always snail mail, e-mail and services such as PR Newswire.
Of course a press release with sufficient gravitas to get picked up by one of the major or minor wire services will reach the global media quite quickly.
Certainly any part of a press release distribution strategy should include putting the press release on the website and possibly doing something to highlight it for new and returning visitors -- be that a flash object or a banner.
An e-mail campaign to existing customers who have gone through an opt-in process would also be useful, but if you don't have that in place by now, it is probably too late.
I simply do not know of any practical way to get a SE to notice or care about a given new press release.
