Hi there I have 2 websites www.site1.com and www.site1.com/site2 that is how they are situated. Using mod rewrite I have www.site2.com pointing to the folder on www.site1.com, so in fact I am masking the true identity of www.site2.com, they are completely different websites, now what I would like to know is

1. is it unethical?
2. is it spam?
3. will either or both of the sites get banned from the search engines as spam?
4. are there any reasons why I shouldn't do this?

Provided it's a 301 from www.site2.com pointing to www.site1.com/site2/ I don't see a problem.

As for ethical, that would depend why you are doing it. If for example, you have bought dite2.com defensively (to stop a competitor using it), then I think that's fair enough.

I will have to check and see if I am doing a 301 redirect I didn't check that when I was testing (plus it was very early morning/late night).

The ethical bit is it is a free site for my kids karate teacher, and the other site is my business domain, I would host the karate one for free in a folder of my site. What I really want to know is would it affect my rankings on google because it is sort of a trick of some kind I gather.

If the topics are that different, you'd do better simply placing the content on the other domain, and avoiding all risk.

Provided your forwarding is 301, the content will only exist once, and I don't see any harm - just little benefit, and potential confusion.

My instinct would be to keep things simple; complications rarely justify the pain!

Thanks Quadrille I think I have it working now, will keep it on my test domain for a while and see what happens in google before committing myself to any such major mods.
