<snip source=Overture public announcement February 15, 2002>
......In January Overture announced a test to provide search listings on MSN.com. We're pleased to let you know this test was a success for our advertisers, for Overture and MSN. As a result, the MSN agreement has been extended through 2003. We will continue to provide search listings on the Microsoft Internet Explorer search pane.
Overture's first three search listings for selected terms (shown in the example below) are found in a section called "Sponsored Sites" when users conduct a search at www.msn.com.
The expansion of the MSN agreement presents an exciting opportunity for you to receive even more targeted leads from Overture. To maximize the number of leads you receive from this agreement with MSN, make sure you're in Premium Listings™ (the top three positions) and that your account stays online........<end snip> .
You need to read the above very carefully in particular the phrase, "for selected terms". I missed this the first time I read it, so off to MSN I go expecting to see top of page results for "web design Calgary". Naturally disappointed, I fired off a quick note to the good people at Overture.
Their response was enlightening:
<quote from Overture support>Overture's search results can be found on selected terms in the following general categories: Computing,
Entertainment, Finance, Health, Homelife, Shopping, and Travel<end quote from Overture support>.
This would appear to mean that the Oveture generated results on MSN will depend on specific categories and then on specific search terms. Given this situation, please check the MSN listings before you bid for top placement.
