Well, time does fly when you're having fun - and we did have great fun this year!
Gimpsy is three years old - and growing strong!
We now exceed 10,000 registered users, who get nothing from the registration except being able to use Gimpsy to its full potential - clearly an encouraging sign!
The directory world underwent massive changes in the last couple of years, with some noticeable 'meteors' that have risen sharply and brightly - but soon crashed down to earth, leaving some very disgruntled site owners behind...
Gimpsy's growth has been good and steady, and we are far from reaching the zenit. To celebrate our success we have put together a package of 'goodies' - which will only last to the end of this month.
To see the details, simply click on the 'birthday cake' you will find on Gimpsy's home page (http://www.gimpsy.com) :)
Here's a short summary:
For the same $40 as the usual review fee, site owners get a full 6 months promotion to top position within the directory.
For half that much, just $20, you can submit a site and have it reviewed within 30 days - guaranteed.
Opening a Gimpsy Account attracts very high bonuses - initial deposit of $40 attracts another $40 in bonuses!
Finally - you can even control your anchor text of one of your links in Gimpsy - use whatever keywords or phrases you fancy!

Well, you said I could use "any" link text I wanted, right? Are you really going to let the user decide what text to use? Is that wise? Or would it make the directory look like a FFA links page?
Congrats on 3 years of service!

Congrats on the 3 years!
I just clicked on the shop link on the home page. The only site listed was a dvd site with no subcategories listed.
Since I have an e-commerce site that does not seem right to me.
To be the second site on that page would be great for a PR link. Something I don't worry about and would not pay for.
I prefer to be on a PR0 or 1 page that is more in-line with the theme of my site.
To get in the right category that is where I usually end up. PRO 1or 2.
I have no problems with paying for a directory listing if I think it will produce traffic. On the other hand I want to be listed in a category that users might be looking for.
If there happens to be an SE benefits from a directory listing that is a bonus. My interest is targeted traffic. I do get some traffic from all the directories I'm listed in.
It would be great if you addressed my concerns, as well as those Doug expressed.

Is money really that tight?
There are three divisions in the Directories League; Premier, Standard and Best Avoided.
You risk falling from the Premier Division in the League of Directories to the Standard. Are you sure the income justifies that move?
Most teams find that lowering standards simply accelerates the fall, not reverses it.

Hi Connie,
That DVD site should not have been in the Shop root category and I thank you for pointing it out. There are actually 3 subcategories in Shop that are listed on the right hand side of the page, I think you just overlooked them. If you check again now, you will definitely see them.
In any case, if you have an e-commerce site you probably want to be listed in the Buy category which is where our searchers go when they are looking for something to buy. The Shop category is more for malls and department stores.
Hope that helps some.
I will let MC answer your other question :)

Thanks for the clarification. I'm used to being in the shopping category so shop looked right. I'll take another look.

Many thanks for your kind words!

Doug, allow me first a compliment - it's so good that someone is always checking if the 'hat' is white, or has it been tainted lately! I appreciate you making a stand for the good practice!
As to the actual questions - the answers are
1. Yes
2. I think so
3. No
Perhaps I was not clear enough, so let me explain: The control we give the users is just over the ANCHOR TEXT of the GIF that represents their home page. We believe that this will allow site owners to represent their site for both humans and search engines in the best way possible.
How about a simple example? Please see the Gimpsy info page (http://www.gimpsy.com/sites/7965482771) within Gimpsy...
Now, hover with the mouse over the picture of the Gimpsy home page. You will notice that the tiptool says 'Find Good sites at Gimpsy'. As a veteran SEO you don't need reminding or convincing, but let's check it out. Please search 'good sites' in Google - you'll find Gimpsy mentioned first (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLC,GGLC:1970-01,GGLC:en&q=good+sites). That's the power of a good and consistent 'anchor text'!
Now pick any other site in Gimpsy and visit the info page. Say, something that you will recognise immediately (http://www.gimpsy.com/sites/1050436511)... :)
The rather uninformative tiptool here says 'Click to open in new window'. I am quite sure that you can pick up a much more appealing way of representing this site :)
Hope that clears it up! (for quadrille too... )
