Is there a difference between ecommerce hosting and just plain web hosting?. If so what is it?

That's actually a much bigger question than you might have realised. there are many possible differences - I can think of several security issues, and a couple of functionality ones too.

You might care to rephrase it, or add some context - what is it that you want to know?

At it's most simple definition, ecommerce hosting would be a host whom has the capability to offer the infrastructure necessary to host ecommerce sites.

The other would not.

For instance, a host might not have the ability to offer SSL, which is not a "requirement" in ecommerce but I would never do ecom without it.

But, to the best of my knowledge, those are more than likely just "names" a host has given to their hosting "packages", as most hosts have the ability to host nearly any kind of site.
