Hi. Long-time reader. First-time poster. My boss has tasked me with creating web copy for the hotel at which I work. I've only been here for a few weeks so I'd like to come back with something really special. I'm hoping he will have me develop an in-house SEO program because I find it a very interesting and highly effective way to market on-line.

I've learned about inserting keywords into copy for content optimization. I optimized the content below for "Austin Hotel" and "Austin Texas Hotel." How did I do? Any comments or suggestions? I'd love to hear your feedback. Webwiz?

"The Sheraton Austin Hotel is the premier facility where business and comfort come together in Austin, Texas. Our hotel offers nine meeting rooms of various sizes to accommodate groups between 5 and 100. All facilities of this Austin hotel feature sound-proof walls, ergonomic chairs, high-speed Internet connectivity and top-notch audiovisual equipment. Each hotel meeting room also includes its own personal planner – a single point of contact on hand to anticipate every detail of your meeting, leaving you free to concentrate on the most important aspect: its success. While the Sheraton Austin Hotel is designed specifically for business professionals, we recognize that there’s no rule confining your stay to all work and no play. For post-meeting events, our hotel features the Capitol Club Room, offering ****tails, hors d’oeuvres, billiards, chess and an overall ideal social setting for business travelers looking to relax after a hard day’s work. Our downtown Austin Texas hotel is the only meeting facility with official certification by the International Association of Conference Centers. And it’s little wonder. At the Sheraton Austin Hotel, business comes first and success comes naturally.

"For the hours spent before and after the meeting, the accommodations at the Sheraton Austin Hotel offer the highest class of comfort and convenience. For additional comfort, our Austin Texas hotel also offers seven elegant suites with Jacuzzi tubs for business travelers looking for the ultimate in luxury.

"Our downtown Austin Hotel also offers guests the premium location. Situated one block from Austin’s legendary 6th Street Entertainment District, the Sheraton Austin is one of the few hotels nestled in the heart of the city that claims the rights to two capital titles – the Texas State Capital and the “Live Music Capital of the World.” The Sheraton Austin Hotel is also located just minutes from the Governor’s Mansion, Convention Center, LBJ Library, Zilker Park, University of Texas and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport as well as a variety of museums and restaurants. By providing the service and flexibility of a first-class hotel, the facilities and features of a conference center and the prime location of a downtown venue, the Sheraton Austin hotel assure guests an unforgettable experience in Austin, Texas."

Welcome to the forums nikkanik! :hi:

It looks like you have been doing your homework! Great!

You are right in that 'content' is very important for ranks. With no words on a page, you can pretty much forget about positions on the engines. Many things come into play though. If you would post your url we could help you even further.

Welcome, Nik!

As far as keywords go, I think this will probably work okay for you. Will this be on the About Us page? I think it works for something like that, but not necessarily for the main page.

As far as the writing itself, personally, I would try and shorten the sentences a bit...make them a bit more snappy and readable.

You could also break up the paragraphs with some keyword rich headlines for easier scannability.

Good luck!

Jill

If this works better as an *About Us* page, what do you suggest for the main page?

hey nik, I would cut down the words on the about us page and put some of them on the front page along with the benefits of your site to the visitor, etc. What is in it for your visitor to stay on your site? What sets your services apart from others?

Also, make sure you stay away from frames. ;)

You might want to email heather@ rankwrite and perhaps it would be something she could discuss in the newsletter one of these weeks. Can't guarantee ya anything though! [note, that's not her whole email address, as I don't want the spam spiders picking it up!]

Good thinking about the spam robots Jill.

Although, my robots tag is disallowing many of them. Whether or not they abey is another story however. :)

You are right on target by using keywords in your content. however, if and when you're looking to be found be visitors through search engines, you need to target keyphrases which are used by them.

If " Austin Hotel" or "Austin Texas Hotel" are popular then its fine. Why dont you check more popular words through a keyword popularity tool?

Thanks for all of your assistance. Ya'll are lightning-quick to post helpful advice.

A few questions in response to your postings:

* What is the optimum word count for a main page? What's the rationale behind that number?

* How many keywords should I focus on when writing any given page?

I normally keep the keywords up to 7 to 8 %. As this is what i've heard so cant say about the rational.

Targeting 2 or 3 three of your keywords or phrases per page is fine.

I like to work with about 200 - 250 words per page. Other amounts can work, I just find that works best for me. Gives you enough words to use the keyphrases enough times and not have to overdo it.

Thanks again for all of your insights. I tightened up the copy and added headings. Check it out. http://www.sheratonaustin.com/_index_002.htm

Oh, and let me know if you'd like to book a room. (Just kidding ... kidding. I realize no one likes shameless self-promotion.)
