I have been included in the database for a few weeks now, and even if I use the search engines in the Ineedhits search engine list to search for my site, and follow the results to my site, no hits are registering. Why?
What is the hits marker there for in the report?
My site is:

www.gigwise.com (http://www.gigwise.com)

Any help much appreciated!
Si

Welcome to the forums perlaki! :hi:

I'm not sure what you mean? When you pay for your url in Inktomi, you are paying for it to be in the index only. You did not pay to be found on your keyword phrases. Your page has to be optimized to be found.

They are only guaranteeing that your page will be spidered and indexed. Hope this makes sense to you.

Thanks for getting back so soon.
What I don't understand is what is the 'HITS' for in the 'status of URLs ' section?

I can't answer that as I have never paid to be included.

Anyone?

i use PositionTech and they do have a Click-thru count for each URL submitted.

The click-thru data they provide represents less that 50% of traffic from the Inktomi partners...it also gives you your average search engine ranking which is just an average, may not be your actual ranking. I do not use this info much....

I am assuming that INeedHits offers the same or similar info throught their Paid Inclusion program.

Oh well, I'll just keep an eye on it. We're being picked up by most of the search engines already, it's just not nice to see the big fat '0'.

It's obviously just been unplugged at the back.

Cheers!

Are your pages optimized? Just because the ineedhits 'hits' aren't registering does not necessarily mean your site is not being found. Check your log files for referral information.

What MsSearch said basically. You should be looking out for any referrals from MSN, AOL and HotBot and if you don't use Pay Per Click, then iWon, Overture and Freeserve, as well. These are the main ones. The click-thru data is particularly poor at picking up AOL hits and hits from outside the US.

As MsSearch and markymark posted, the click-thru data is only partial data from some of the Inktomi partners. This may be why some of the engines list the URL with the inktomi redirect, for tracking purposes.

My site is optimized and I've only had 1 clickthrough from Inktomi (on an irrelevant phrase). I think Inktomi is highly overrated if you ask me.

and yes, I have to agree with Jill on this.... over-rated. Too bad as there is only 2 to 3 real good sources of traffic. MSN, Google, and for some, Yahoo. Although I do have to say that there are good referrals from MSN/Inktomi.

Really depends on how competitive the terms are...anything highly competitive will be superceded by paid listings such as Overture and Looksmart for MSN. However, the moderate and less competitive terms can bring a good bit of traffic [through the secondary results] for MSN, AOL, and Looksmart. Inktomi also has a feed into Overture, which can also provide traffic directly or indirectly through its partners such as Excite and Webcrawler, not to mention the other vast number of Overture results providers.

I guess "search engine optimization" is too competitive then! I knew it would be, but I was still hoping...

I think I'm still happy to stick with the free Inktomi. I might as well have lit that $30 or whatever it was on fire!

Yes, I believe that is too competitive to even attempt. I think the current rate is $25/URL, but in the early days it was $10/$12 dollars....

As JuniorHarris says, the really competitive terms are not worth optimising for. But I do well (for clients) with Ink - cleaned up over valentines day for example. Optimise for three word phrases (not search engine optimization, though ;) and you can get good traffic. I am often surprised that people moan about the number of hits they get via Ink. partners as I've never found it a problem.

I think it's real value at the moment is in AOL - if you are optimising a clothing, gifts, cosmetics or that kind of site, the AOL traffic alone makes it more than worthwhile.
