Just an update on Web Search. Apparently a private sponsor has been able to raise money for their servers, so they hope to have the search engine back up and running next week. I'm also going to make this thread sticky so people have access to the list of engines and can add to it.

New Zealand has a new search engine/portal called Local Eye (http://www.localeye.info) Quite a nice looking site. But note that it is limited to the Christchurch / Canterbury region. Thanks to nzbase (http://www.nzbase.com) for the tip :thumb:

The following is from the LookAbout submit page:

Our submission service has been helping thousands advertise their site for free every month all over the internet.
system submits URLs to over 68050 search engines including:
our own, Yahoo!, Google, Hot Bot and many other top worldwide search engines/directories as well as Country-specific search engines/directories.
It also submits to an amazing 3.3 Million FFA (Free For All) link pages, over 135255 Classified Ads sites and over 17790 Message Boards! All for a modest $39!

LOL

(this is the first time I have ever written LOL)

Good find wbrook! Seems that Lookabout should be ignored by everyone. :thumb:

Yes nice find wbrook, thanks for the heads up  . AAAMatilda / LookAbout seems to have declined rather rapidly.

this goes to what I was talking about, in that with little or no support, these sites just can't keep pouring cash and resource into their projects.

I'm unsure if it's a good thing that the nature of economies of scale kill them off or if they [ some of these sites that are getting less than say 30,000 monthly unique vists a month ] should get some govt support etc.

I do strongly beleive that if you just download a simple perl or php directory tool and start building another bloody directory full of yet more sites manually managed, then frankly unless you're filling a niche of some sort, the why bother unless you're just having fun and hence have to accept the cost that goes with any pet project [ such as house renovation or rebuilding a nice shiny MG Convertable right ].

there are more than 683 companies ( mostly sole trader single person companies ) in AU who claim to be web design, SEO or SEM's and many run their own little "search engines" as it were.

There's no way they would be able to work togeather, human nature doesn't work like that, one or two may, but not hundreds of them - to their own detriment and eventual demise I'm sure.

What frustrates me is that good site owners may invest real mony in "getting listed" and six months later their money is gone and the sites vanish and the "dudes" running the sites go get a full time day job and try to pay all the bills.

That's scary, it's happened in software, isp's, asp's, the whole dot com [ or dot con as it mostly was ] etc - and I guess won't stop.

This more than anything - regardless of traffic, has to be why brand's will always win.

Just wanted to add a new list of Kiwi search engines and directories (http://www.search-engines-2.com/country/new-zealand.html) that Danny Sullivan referenced in his newsletter today. Looks good! :thumb:

One must not forget the Kiwi Search engine it has an index of more than twenty four million Kiwi web pages, it's free to be indexed into and it's usually indexed within four hours.

Hi Dez I have set up the Linknz search engine, I wrote it over seven months, it's offering free indexing to all Kiwi websites, it uses a web spider called the Linknzbot to fully index websites into the search engine. So far it is being searched around 120,000 times a day.
On average twenty web site owners a day ask for their websites to be indexed into the search engine, it is usually completed within four hours.
So far it has indexed around twenty four million Kiwi web pages and it is a first being "Childsafe" because all porn is filtered out by algorythms built into the search engine.
It is hosted in the Lower Hutt valley so it really is based in New Zealand.
It is pretty fast at giving results to searches.
It's big enough to index ASB bank's website 3000 pages and also small enough to index a child in Levin's home pages.
Everybody gets an even chance and all Kiwi's can be listed for free.
Give it a try my friend.
All the best
Dave Andrews

Have you left your brain behind on the bus????

You do realise that post was made in back in 2002 and that most of those search engines are no longer in operation?
