View Full Version : Traffic Anyone?

I finally pulled my listing from FindWhat. I wasn't getting much traffic. I expect the loss of Excite hit them pretty hard. I'm still hoping there will be more competition in the PPC industry.
Given some choice, I probably wouldn't pick Overture.
Similar to the situation with my cable company's customer no-service policy. If there was competition they would have to provide a better service.
FindWhat is definitely reachable. I'll give them that at least.
Anyone getting traffic from FindWhat?

Yes - pulled mine too. The only traffic seems to come from some pretty awful affiliates. One of which buys up expired domains which have good link-pop and traffic and serves up a directory which consists of Findwhat links. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of these sites which are now starting to clog up the SERPs on main stream engines like Google, Ink and ATW.
Example here (http://www.hollow-moon.com), or this (http://www.seraph.org/) or this (http://www.interafrica.com). So, watch out if you have a popular term on Findwhat. They turn up on loads of sites like this.
I think this is one of the bigger scams going on on the internet right now - but I've posted about this elsewhere an no-one seems to be worried about it

Does anyone get any traffic from Dogpile results?

Dogpile was my #5 referrer representing 3.62% of my search engine referrals for January. Of course, the first 10 listings you
see are from Overture.

have you noticed when you search on findwhat that many times there are no results? even on fairly popular search terms. looks like the only results are paid results. i thought they used ask jeeves for secondary. anyone know?

According to their info (http://www.findwhat.com/content/investor.asp) page, they were using DirectHit. However, I too only found paid results.

I'm working a campaign for a client of mine which sells insurance, and I bid on a database of terms (over a 1000 of them which was probably unwise in itself) and i'm now getting around a 100 clicks per day from Findwhat.com
I use a bid maximizer and my average CPC is like $0.35 (high in my experience for Findwhat) but we're getting lots of hits
I'm not sure exactly how many of these 100 clicks per day are turning into leads, but I expect very few, i'm gonna pause the account for a week and see what happens to #Leads/Day
Anyone else having similar experiences? Words of wisdom on the subject?

Instead of paying per click, why not build several well linked pages with good content that will atract more clicks?
My stint with pay per click:
Month 1: spending $40
Month 2: spending $60
Month 3-6: spending $150-180
Month 7-9: spending $50-60
Month 10-12 spending $30
During the first 2-3 months I tried several: Goverture, FindWhat, Ah-ha
I ended up sticking with Overture for a while. The others just didn't provide much traffic or sales. Overture provided some sales.
Now, our sales are better than ever. Overture got us some exposure. But the biggest factor has been building a large site with lots of links coming in.
Now I'm working on some other related sites. With the backing of a high PR site, I no longer need PPC to get exposure. I've had 3 sites hit PR 6 within 2 months. Now I'm moving on to buiding 3 more sites.
So my answer is:
1. Use PPC to get exposure and sales early on
2. Build pages and sites like crazy (but do a quality job)
3. Goodbye PPC
4. FindWhat? A decent company as PPC's go. Leads and Traffic? Questionable. I don't think FindWhat really has any accounts with search engines where the average surfer would ever go, do they?

When we first launched our main site, we didn't exit in the search engines so PPC was necessary evil that drove significant traffic. over time and through seo, though, our presence in the search engines got high enough that the PPC ROI was not there- in order to maximize traffice and minimize the cost-per-click, we REALLY had to stay on top of all of the terms and make constant adjustments. time consuming and expensive, really. i also found that the qulaity of your leads is direclty related to the the host of the results- it has nothing to do with FW or Overture. By that, i mean findwhat does a good job, is easy to use and has great customer service- but the sites that have its results are crap to our market. Overture on the other hand wasn't as easy to work with (although it is now) but it's presence on AOL was ideal for the type of traffic we were looking for. PPC to is more about knowing where the results are posted than the company itself- which lead to us minimizing and finally canceling our FW account. I agree with you david- use ppc as a tool early on, then use it sparingly where necessary.

As of March 20th our traffic level was at 73. Sure that only cost us $20.89 but of those 73 clicks 65 came from one keyword that already is in deep competition and infact that term on overture has bids of $5.00. We cant compete in that race......at $5.00 could they possibly be making money??
to re-focus here........ is 73 a good number? I assume any number is good as long as sales follow suit after it.
