I tried the Looklistings for a while. I decided that I wasn't getting all that much traffic and of the traffic I got, few were paying customers.

I am now considering re-investing that money in another category or two. I currently have two. Anybody have any concrete examples to show how they benefited by adding a category?

I expect it would be good to optimize for a different part of my site rather than the index again.

If adding another category in Looksmart, I would target different keywords (that are relevant for a different category), especially if you already have 2 other listings.

Are these other listings your index page? or are they different pages?

Adding another category will increase your MSN visibility for a range of keywords within the scope of your website.

P.S. I also tried the SitePromote and they cut me off mid-month cause i had already reached my maximum amount of hits...Did not like that service...

I just did the add a category thing. I was hoping for a subpage to be listed, with a seperate title for that page, but instead they just dropped the exact same listing into a subcategory. Pretty useless, not going to get anything from that!

How do a get the subsite listings with seperate title and subpage? It's not add a category?

The Looksmart Add-a-Category description doesn't imply, in my opinion, that they would add a subpage but add your first listing to another category...which they did for you...

Possibly try requesting a change....anything is worth a try. I haven't tried this yet. Or if you paid the Express Sub. fee and submitted a subpage...

If the page is non-commercial you couold try submitting it through Zeal...

At least with your listing in 2 categories, it should increase exposure of your site across the Looksmart partners....

I also tried SitePromote for a client and his listing disappeared after 3 weeks, even though they keep deducting the credit card. Do they usually reinstate the listing at the beginning of each month after the "maximum click-thru" thing is applied? He is wondering when they are going to re-instate the listing. I've emailed LS with no response.

Doug - what were your thoughts on SitePromote - worth the traffic delivered? I think I'll recommend a new cat to my client instead...

I quit after one month. Was not worth it to me but others may have a different experience.

And yes, they will cut you off at 200 clicks during the month, then recharge the card and start up again for another 200 clicks.

Doug,
You have me worried. :(
As an experiment I started paying for some keyword listings with Overture and while I was pleased to see that the results began appearing in Dogpile etc. still I HATE giving carte blanche to anyone to keep charging my credit card. Do you know if Overture does this?

Greg - don't worry, Overture give you a choice of automatic credit card deductions, or a self-serve top up scheme (kind of like a pre-pay phone card). You just open the account with $50 and then add funds whenever you like (minimum of $25 at a time).

They email you about a week before your account is likely to run out, based on your average click-thrus. You can also use multiple credit cards and choose the most appropriate one to top up your account with.

With Looksmart, you can cancel your account at any time prior to them deducting the next month's fees.

Thanks for the re-assurance Kal.

BTW how did you go with those trackers?

I remember asking you about trackers, but can't remember the thread where we discussed it  so I haven't seen your response. Can you point me in the right direction?

Not sure myself now. I think we got off the main point somewhere but the 2 trackers I suggested were

http://extremetracking.com
and http://sm6.sitemeter.com

The second one gives the keyword phrases people use to find you. Both have free versions and load quite quickly compared to hitbox.
