Hi Everyone,

I have a query concerning the geographic locations of my website visitors.

I am using WebLog Expert as my package for viewing my website stats which - although limited in some areas - has provided me with a decent enough platform from which to analyse my promotional campaign… until now.

After a recent promotional focus in the UK city of York I thought I would take a look and check the affect it had on my regional traffic stats. Here in lies the problem. The package has been collecting data since January 2005 so I know it is unlikely that my 2 month long York blitz would see York ranking up there with London in the regional stats but the bizarre thing is it doesn’t rank at all.

In fact the regional stats are altogether very strange. To give an idea, here are the top 5 cities in the ‘Visitors – Cities’ tab:

1: London - United Kingdom = 11,588 visitors
2: Ipswich - United Kingdom = 5,952
3: Mountain View, California - United States = 5,266
4: San Mateo, California - United States = 4,122
5: Leeds, United Kingdom = 3,752

Firstly there have been 152,908 visitors to the site since January 2005 and the total shown for the Cities stats is only 102,800.

Secondly I am shocked to see the number of visitors from small cities/towns be so high (Thurso in Scotland comes 8th overall with 1406 visits and its population is only 8,600, London’s is over 7 million!)

‘British’ in the UK comes 50th - I am not quite sure where ‘British’ is.

The appearance of Mountain View California where the population is over 70k is the weirdest of all. Isn’t this where Google live? Why would the visitors from here be so high?

I only market to the UK and have a .co.uk domain yet according to the stats absolutely loads of traffic comes from the US and other countries.

Does anyone know how the stats are created for this particular area of WebLog expert and if they are accurate? Is there any other way for me to find out how successful my regional marketing is?

Thanks very much in advance.

L

I'm no expert in these matters, but my understanding is that the stats do not give postal addresses, rather the 'node' or whatever it's called, that their Internet connection is linked to.

So certain towns feature in a fairly silly way - the Lutons, Croydons and others which house Internet companies and their connections - while others remain invisible.

It's only fair to add that I may be utterly wrong; with a bit of luck, someone will come along wth some certainty :)
