I discoverd Overture free search term tool first and was really pleased with it. I came up with 100 or so search terms for my site.

But everyone here raves about Wordtracker being even better, so I signed up for a day. I didn't really find it better. For me it was rather unwieldy and choatic. Primarily it seemed to focus on single words while overture's tool was more geared to 3-4 word search terms.

Did I miss something? I only used it for a day, but the interface was a bit cluttered and confusing -- especially compared to overtures simple box. Please let me know.

I've read on this forum that some prefer wordrtracker because it's results are less influenced by web ranking software, but I don't think would affect me too much because I'm in an artistic field where most competition ( at least yet) is not optimizing or using that stuff too much.

thanks, Kevin C.

Kevin, I'm afraid you must have missed something. It's not at all geared toward one-word words. It's geared to which ever words/phrases people search on.

I could see if you're new to WT how it could be daunting. I started with it when it was brand new and there wasn't a lot to it. They've added and added over the years so it could be pretty confusing to the newbie.

I think I should write a WT tutorial for newbies! You just inspired me!

So tell me what it was you did with WT and maybe I can figure out what you did wrong. Is your subscription up already?

Yeah, I just used it for one day a week ago and said, man, that's it, I'm sticking with overture. I just didn't see harldy any search terms that overture didn't have; and to get to those search terms was more cumbersome than overture.

In short, my impression was that overture was better and cheaper, but, since everyone here likes wordtracker more, (and everyone here is pretty darn smart) I'm curious to what I missed. What did I miss? thanks!

PS Jill,

Sorry, can't specify exactly what I did. Just remember going through several parts of the confusing interface and plugging in keywords like you do on overture.

As a Wordtracker user for I think at least two years now, it is by far the best keyword research tool an SEO could have in their toolbox (oh that sounds hokey). Anyway, take a peak here (http://www.seoconsultants.com/search-engine-forums/images/screen-shot-wordtracker-022702.gif), this is the heart of Wordtracker and the research capabilities are far reaching. There are many options to choose from, the reports are awesome and the entire web based interface is impressive!

thanks, I already know you think it's the best I still don't why it's better than overtures tool.

I'm sure I'll check it out again, but if anyone wants to say specifically what's better about it than overture I'd love to hear.

I haven't used Overture in ages, so I can't speak to that. If I remember correctly, you could simply check your words with Overture.

With WT, it actually goes and searches through other site's meta tags and stuff and comes up with suggestions for related words that you might want to run through. If you're working on a project on a subject that you're not that familiar with, this is invaluable.

WT also runs competitive reports. You can take your list of keywords, do a competitive analysis on say Google, and it will tell you how competitive the words are, and which may be the best to shoot for in your optimization. The idea is to find keywords that don't have zillions of other sites already optimized for them, yet they are ones real people are searching on.

Those are the main differences.

The other reason that many people think WT is better is because they believe the results are more accurate. That is, the numbers that WT come up with seem to be more true than the Overture numbers. I haven't compared them a lot lately, so I can't say. I know it used to be true. But with Overture on all the main engines now, I do wonder. Of course, the great thing about WordTracker is that you can ALSO query the Overture database right from WT. So you essentially get the best of both worlds.

Hope this helps!
