Today my Backlinks, according to Google, have increased by about 200. What does mean in terms of ranking, PR etc? Absolutely nothing. Just want all link junkies out there to know that the info is useless :D

Don't backlink junkies check their backlinks every day?

I was hoping you could tell me that.

Onsite factors plus one or two good links is all you need. Work in the same field long enough and you'll end up owning enough related sites with different content to provide your own authority backlinks.
PR has a value 'cos Google still talks about it. Look at the G-maps console that gives you a breakdown of your PR distribution. This is a new service and Google could very well have left that feature off.

you'll end up owning enough related sites with different content to provide your own authority backlinks Don't want to interfere much into your personal and often funny disputes, but the above quote is absolute bogus.
Building mini-networks is a big no-no !

By some luxurious coincidence my newest site (started in Feb) has just acquired toolbar PR of 3. This comes from a homepage link from a site with toolbar PR of 5, a link on a holding page for another domain with toolbar PR of 0 and a "Stumbleupon" review from a page with a toolbar PR of 3. There are no other backlinks of which I'm aware.
The site is of course still sandboxed, but I believe the acquisition of PR will shorten the sentence.

I understand that. It's not a network. I simply use the power of established respected sites under my control to kick-start new domains with related content by strictly one-way links.
It's used sparingly and is relevent to my visitors because the sites are different yet in the same theme.

This quote is lifted directly from a Google inside page.....and written by Matt Cutts....
Ranking Results
Now we have the set of pages that contain the user's query somewhere, and it's time to rank them in terms of relevance. Google uses many factors in ranking. Of these, the PageRank algorithm might be the best known. PageRank evaluates two things: how many links there are to a web page from other pages, and the quality of the linking sites. With PageRank, five or six high-quality links from websites such as www.cnn.com and www.nytimes.com would be valued much more highly than twice as many links from less reputable or established sites.
It would appear that PR and quality backlinks are valued ranking factors.

Dave.....
I think you may be overlooking the likely possibility that the effect new links links have on ranking position has taken place long before PR is updated and shown to the public.

It would appear that PR and quality backlinks are valued ranking factors.Like someone said otherwise?
I think you may be overlooking the likely possibility that the effect new links links have on ranking position has taken place long before PR is updated and shown to the public.Who said anything about PR being updated?
I simply use the power of established respected sites under my control to kick-start new domains with related content by strictly one-way links.Do you leave the links there after you have kick-started the new site?

Big update for me. Google now reports 80 backlinks. The most I have ever seen is 69 and that fluctuates from 49 to 69 every few months. Never a change in the TB PR.
A lot more www links from forum profiles are showing up in this update.
Google's backlink updates are really a reason to get excited. :D

Do you leave the links there after you have kick-started the new site?
Until it establishes its own backlinks naturally. New sites are a rare occurence for me so, yes, those "kick-start" links do end up being quite long-term.

Why not leave them there?
Because if another target presents itself it is natural to move your artillery.
