Last night I sent a couple of e-mails to the editors of two separate areas in the DMOZ listing. I inquired as to the status of two URLS I had submitted several weeks ago. To my surprize I had a response from both editors this morning.

One editor let me know my site was listed in the DMOZ on the 19th but the editor changed the category and description. He was also nice enough to inform me that my page had some minor errors but the editor who had approved my site noted those errors and cut me a break and listed my site anyway.

The other editor replied with a short and sweet "I approved your site today and it will be listed. Sorry for the delay."

This just goes to prove that some good communication goes a long way. I waited a few weeks then sent a very, very, very nice e-mail requesting the status of my URL's.

Good story Lazyz! Thanks for sharing.

There are some real good editors out there including a couple right here in the forums. :)

I am sure there are, now I just need to find one that will help me. Our site that is NOT in the dmoz directory is our main one and we have owned the domain for about 6 years. I know it used to be in but for some reason got turfed. I am trying to get it back in and even wrote to the editor just today. (also wrote once before and that got ignored)

Hi Chinook,

Is it the Chinook Computers site you are talking about? If so it's in the directory here:

http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=chinook+computers

If not let me know and I'll give you some more info.

The site I am after is www.chinook-computers.com. The other one is also one of ours but it needs a major overhaul and it will focus on different things. Thanks for looking and any info would be super great.

Wolf, have you tried just re-submitting it again?

I would try that first.

Then after submitting I would wait about 4-6weeks. If you still aren't in I would check if the category has an editor and if so email them, if not go up one category and email that editor. Again if no editor in that cat keep moving up till you find one. Keep your email brief and to the point and include the following information:

Your name, your site's name, and your site URL
When you submitted the site
Name any other editors you've contacted (if this is not your first contact)
What you submitted as a description
The specific category you submitted to (ex: Business/Employment/Staffing_Services/Specialty_Services)

Explain the situation and ask if there is a problem with your site.

Again if no response perhaps wait a few weeks and then email again.

Basically is is persistence and patience.

Let us kow how you go.

Sophie

One other suggestion: I notice you don't include a physical address on the site. I would add one. It is generally needed to get into Open Directory.

>site that is NOT in the dmoz directory...it used to be in but for some reason got turfed<
I know the feeling. Even though I'm #1 on all other engines, DMOZ fails to list my site. :horns: My site disappeared and a copycat site was put in its place. Over the years, more copycat sites are added, but not mine. But what the heck, I've been getting by on my other SE traffiic. ;)

How can I place any value on the only directory that refuses to list my site, when I'm #1 on ALL OTHERS. I dont use any spammy techniques, but the sites they list do! Maybe I should.
(please note: i will not disclose the site)

Not to get off track but what comes to mind is that I might have a site listed DMOZ and not even know it (especially if the editor changed my description, title, etc...).

What search string can I use to search for a particular domain in DMOZ?

On SE's like Altavista and Google I simply search for the domain - mydomain.com but with DMOZ it doesn't work that way.

I dont bother much with DMOZ for obvious reasons, but you could try searching by Domain Name (http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=chinookcomputers.net).

Didnt realize that you posted this didnt work, but it worked for me. Make sure that you arent getting the message about the server being busyThe Open Directory search is currently under a heavy load. Please try back later
