Are there any objective rankings (like Consumer Reports) of companies that offer to register your web page on search engines? Are these companies reliable? Is there a way to verify that they are actually registering the web page on major search engines and that they are competent?

Welcome to the forums BillMurray! :hi: Great name, always liked him.

I can answer your question of if there is any rating on the companies. Actually no there is not as there are many small, unknown ones who could do just as well as the big companies.

The other questions I will leave to others in here so you can get more objective answers.

Well, since I do allow links, no reason you cannot view this link:

Of course, these are my opinions.

Come on ya all. Those of you who have hired an SEO before might give your reasons for hiring them and what you looked for.

Those who are an SEO might post more helpful links or give us your 2 cents also.

Bill,

One quick thought...registering with the search engines is just a teeny-tiny bit of what a good search engine consultant needs to do. In fact, that's defnitely the easiest part in my mind. But you have to remember that there's no sense registering a site that hasn't been optimized for high rankings. No sense at all. Now, of course, you can still register with the directories and not have an optimized site, but since those listings will remain there pretty much until the end of time, you sure better make sure you choose a company who has the knowledge and experience to do Directory submittals correctly and in such a way that you'll get traffic from them.

And since we're self promoting today...I too have a link that may be of interest to you. It's called "No Quick Fix to HIgh Search Engine Rankings" and can be found at: http://www.rankwrite.com/quickfix.htm

Good luck!

Jill

Good Jill. Its not self promoting as we are giving useful links to the thread. That is fine. It is blatant ads that serve no purpose to the thread that are not allowed.

You did real good!

HI BillMurray;

Good to see you on the forum.

Choosing an SEO is not a cut and dried proposition, as there are many different approaches to SEO and many different standards of ethics. too.

If I were looking to outsource SEO work I would first of all look at the services offered and how they price them.

Some SEOs will only do work for you if the pages they optomize reside on their servers, this means you will have to continue to pay them for as long as you want your pages to rank well.

Some SEOs will offer a flat price and guarantee a top ten or twenty rating. Beware these since there is no way anyone can guarantee top listings for some of the very competitive keywords.

Others will offer to look at you website, decide on what needs to be done and give you a report on what they feel they can do for you and how much it will cost. These would form my group to select from. Enter into a discussion with some that look good to you, ask for examples and results achieved in the past, testimonials from real customers, where their own websites rank for such and such a keyword and then make a decision.
