Hi there - I've been busy adding new worldwide search engine lists to my site. Thought I'd add a link here to my list of U.K. Search Engines (http://www.high-search-engine-ranking.com/List_of_Regional_Search_Engines.htm#Most Popular U.K. Search Engines) I'm sure I've missed some, so feel free to add any I've missed to this thread!

<edit>Just a note that this list has now been updated with all suggestions from this thread. Thanks and keep 'em coming!</edit>

Great list, Kal.

Delete Excite UK though - dead and buried :(

Showing up in the UK are portals like Freeserve and NTL. They are already covered by your list in terms of true SEs - but for anybody looking - now they know that your list is complete :)

And to add to MMT's comments - BTOpenWorld, which again, is just really fed by LookSmart.

Think you missed www.uk.overture.com as well.

What about www.250000.co.uk and www.great-british-pages.co.uk ? Are these still around? Providing any traffic?

> are these around? Yes

>.. providing traffic..

No! And they never did!

Are they worth adding?

Probably as important as my own search engine
:D

PS. I have a search box on my site - it probably gets nearly as many searches as these two!

Hi Kal,

You might want to add my new PPC engine www.intheuk.net I stress that it is new! £5 is credited to each account created - try before you buy sort of thing!

Iain

Making this thread sticky so people have faster access to the list and can add more engines as they come across them.

For completeness then Tiscali should be on the list.

I know that they are an offshoot of great british pages but we are getting more traffic now from www.london-pages.co.uk and www.kent-pages.co.uk (as part of their syndication with Espotting).

This could be helpful as a footnote:
http://www.webmarketingplus.co.uk/market_research/uk_search_use.html
although the statistics are awaiting an update now, which I hope will be performed in the next couple of months.

Good Morning people,

I collated UK site search engines/directories a while ago and was wondering if anyone would like a copy?

The word document is 404k and I've zipped it up to 245K which, I see, is too big to add to my post as an attachment. (It contains 82 sites).

There are a few directories/ses related to Scotland - here's one which might be useful
http://www.scottishsearch.com

If you like, I'll search out a few more for you from time to time!

Thanks
Mar:)

German, French , Chinese, etc. directories/search engines...

Do they accept/crawl English language sites?

You would have to be a multilingual person to find their add url pages

Too true, I think you would indeed!!

I can only imagine that those who actively court english language submissions will clearly identify the facility for adding english based urls.

Those that do not, simply arent interested. :(

If they are targetting their own communities, then it is likely that they wish to remain relevant to native speakers only.

Does anyone know of usage stats for the UK engines?

Would be nice to know

a. what % of searches are done through each portal?
b. What % of UK users opt for the UK versions of the engines as opposed to the global versions?
c. What % of these users also use the UK rather than the global search option in engines such as Google UK which default to a global search?

Thanks

Alasdair

Woops - I see Black Knight has posted on this issue - http://www.webmarketingplus.co.uk/m...search_use.html

However, the details suggested in my previous post may still be worth looking into deeper

I've come across this (http://www.allsearchengines.co.uk/) whilst reading one of my newsletters. It's pretty good if you want to target the UK.

Thanks for that Daminc

Not exactly an 'independent' resource in itself, but may well be useful to someone looking to query the uk engines from a single source.

I'm pretty sure there are others out there offering the same kinda thing for uk searchers, but cannot recall exactly where, so Ill certainly bookmark this for future reference :)

Can anybody throw some light on search engine alliance structure of UK?

That will be very helpful indeed.

jitesh,

If you try Bid Buddy (http://www.bidbuddy.co.uk/engines.html) they have an up to date word document with all of the tie ups which shows quite well who feeds who and in what capacity.

An earlier contributor to this thread asked about Scottish directories.

I have found that the following all have free submit options:

http://www.scotfind.com/
http://www.allofscotland.com/
http://www.scotsearch.org/
http://www.scotsmart.com/
http://www.scottishmultimedia.co.uk/home.htm
http://www.scotlandweb.co.uk (company details rather than URL submit as far as I can see)
http://www.scotlands.com/tp/
http://www.scottishsearch.com/
http://www.rampantscotland.com (you have to send them an email)

Hope this is useful.

One absentee from your list that you might like to add is http://www.atuk.co.uk

This is a search engine and directory for the UK, split by county/region, primarily geared towards travel, tourism and leisure. It also has sections for shopping, activities, and so on.

I made the compilation back in 29/07/02 and the zip file is too weighty to attach here (zip file = 245k) so, if you still want it, PM me with an email address to send it to and I'll post it of asap.
