In this (http://www.uk.revolutionmagazine.com/comment/view.cfm?r=1&id=85046) article on the Revolution magazine website, it appears the BBC are to enter the regional search engine arena.
The interview is with Tom Loosemore, the current head of new applications. Before you completely dismiss the idea though, it seems he may have done his research. He does mention the proliferation of pay to play polluting results, and mentions Googles recent move towards commercialism with their new Adwords program.
According to the article, the BBC engine will be partly based on Google technology. Still, they would have to overcome the natural bias towards promoting their own stories over those provided by external sources to become a real player (IMHO).
Be interesting to see how this turns out...
