:hi: Hello again,
Two quick questions.
I submitted my URL to the main Google engine on the 14 July and I've been reading here about the recent whatchamacallit but I'm not listed. Did I not submit early enough to be considered this time round?
And also, should I submit to the separate Google UK engine or is really just the same database used?

hey Joe, ... Any pages submitted during the month are usually spidered by Googlebot at the end of the month and the first week of the following month. Then, the page can show up in the index at the end of that following month.
If your site a one good link leading to it, it should be in the index at the end of August. Since you submitted in the middle of the month, Googlebot will spider your site the end of this month. Next re-indexing is the end of next month.
Submitting to the main Google should eventually get you into UK Google also.

I understand the need for quality reciprocal themed links between similar sites but have no idea whether a good site ranking in say the Open directory or Yahoo would count as links for Google ranking purposes.
Can anyone please advise
Thanks
Colin

Welcome to the forums Colin! :hi:
You are right. Any good link like that is good for Google, including ODP, Yahoo, and Looksmart.
Best is to get into all 3 of them. Every good link helps you with Google.

Thanks for prompt reply.
These forums are going to be really helpful to me.
On the subject of link popularity would high rankings in the major search engines like AV, Excite, Lycos also count as links for Google purposes?
I used to use the Linkstoyou link pop scheme but found that Alta Vista dropped all my sites for no other reason other than I was using a link pop farm. I did not use doorway pages or hidden text etc.
Is it still worth using Linkstoyou at the risk of alienating AV as I did not get many hits from AV anyway but I wonder if dropping Linksto you will start to adversely effect my positions in the other search engines?
Thanks again
Colin

I'm not sure Google uses any influence from AV, Excite or Lycos...as I don't remember reading/hearing such information. However I believe it is important to have a listing in DMOZ which Google uses to populate it's Google directory (separate from search index), as well as Yahoo and Looksmart I believe (Doug will have to answer Looksmart conclusively).
There has been much discussion recently concerning engines (specifically Google) using an expert site rating system and deploying filters to penalize and/or remove listings affiliated with particular link farms. I have only read reports regarding such, as we do not utilize any, but in Google's effort to reduce spam they very well could penalize valid link farms [if there are such] accidentally.
It is my opinion Google closely analyzes and weighs the theme for any reciprocal links/sites to determine relevancy. In some cases links (from farms and such) may not even be counted (best case) and possibly the page penalized or removed (worst case) for possible popularity spamming and/or off-topic themes. Remember Google has been (successful) in the business for some time now, and they are very well aware of the usage of link-farms and the such. Though they may not currently be able to filter all farms, you can bet they are aware of the more popular ones!~
