Loved Jill's great newsletter and interview with Barry. Spoke of best of Web.
I just paid position tech a month ago for 6 urls and went from zero presence to great ratings in MSN all around.
But I don't see anything referring on MSN to best of Web. or BOW. Where is that? and how do you know you are a part of it?
Also, what do people think of paid inclusion? How likely is it that one could replicate a great presence for free? Is it necessary to repay every year?
thanks Kevin C.

Barry has posted about BOW in here as well in some detail. Do a search for that word to find the thread.
As far as MSN? BOW cannot be seen. It is a database your site might or might not be in.
I personally do not pay for inclusion. The big advantage is that your site is spidered every 48 hours. There is no advantage for ranks. My site is always ranked and clients are ranked eventually as well.
If you get a url into Looksmart, you are in the BOW database, at least that is my belief. Otherwise, getting into BOW takes time for free.
Oh, the thread is in Jill's newsletter.

What is the easiest way to get your urls into Inktomi for free? Wouldn't it be difficult and take a long time?
If not, maybe when my year is up I'll go the free route. something tells me it might be a lot more getting those 6 urls into inktomi than in google.

Easiest way is to get into Looksmart with the one time fee.
Cheapest way is to get into as many directories as you can and let Ink find your site on it's own. DMOZ comes to mind.
It usually takes 2-3 months or so but sometimes sooner.

Doug, site's been in LS a couple of months now, but not yet in Ink.
Been sitting on my hands waiting to get picked up, but am running out of patience.

Dmoz may be a good choice. Coz i have been in looksmart for some months and my site is still not spidered by INK. When searched in the Pure ink results http://169.207.238.189/search/
I still se my Dmoz title and description and NOT the LS one.

One of my site is neither in LS nor in Dmoz. It appears fine in search results on MSN ( web pages). When I check the referring link its shows me the actual domain of the site. Now if it’s not in the Ink and other directories, how come it shows in INK results. It also shows a fresh title which I recently changed. Is there a chance that this site is in the BOW? Quite confusing

Jill's latest has a follow up on this from MMT.
Still clear as mud to me, index page is in MSN as well but no ink.

Yes. The question and answer between Jill and Barry was very good in Jill's newsletter!
Maybe MMT will jump in here?

What is MMT?
I have not one, but four category listings in ODP, and a terrific presence in Google, Yahoo, and until I paid Position Tech to index my key 6 urls, whenever I typed in a key search term in MSN, nothing would come up. Now with position tech everything comes up.
I would prefer not to pay the the $164 every year to position tech, if I don't have to, but based on my experience here, would I be likely to achieve what I have achied with position tech on my own?

Thanks, looked at thread. Bow still seems nebulous and meaningless to me. I mean, from what I ascertain, there is no way to know if you are in it, and what effect it has anyway. Right?
Any answers to my previous post here? Appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, you can do it by not paying. Doug doesn't pay and gets sites listed well in Inktomi. You just have to prepared to wait several months. Many people don't want to wait or take the risk of their site not being included - but if you do things which get you into Google and AllTheWeb (ODP, Yahoo and LookSmart) - you should show up in Ink for free.
>there is no way to know if you are in it, and what effect it has anyway. Right?
If you are in a competitive area and have 20 sites above you that appear to have pretty poor optimization but just stay in the same positions month after month - odds are you are not in BOW - when one day you suddenly shoot up into the top 10 without changing anything on your site - you can be pretty sure you are :)
It isn't worth getting too worried about - good sites make it in time and once in, it is easier to get good rankings on tougher terms.
For most people it really won't have much effect - on MSN competitive terms are buried under LS listings anyway! It only really matters on AOL currently.
Oh, I'm MMT :hi:

Thanks MMT
Question:
If I just paid position tech $164 for 5-6 urls, what would be the strategy to get these urls in for free in the future, in a sort of seamless transition. ie. what would you, how do you do it, and how many months before position tech expires?
thanks
Kevin
