Any tips out there on when or if one should resubmit a site to a search engine?

Many are of the belief that a listing will have more value if found naturally through the crawling process. It may take some patience, but not as much time as one would expect. With Doug's philosophy, target the directories and let the engines come to you!~

How new is the site and how recently have you submitted to the engines?

Resubmission - the mini minefield as I like to call it.

Firstly, always ask "why am I going to resubmit this page?" Has it changed significantly. Not just a swift change of the meta tags but real significant changes.

Am I currently ranking well? If so then think carefully before resumitting at all, especially if you have made major changes! You may just lose that position.

Remember that AltaVista (Cough, splutter) counts the age of your page in its ranking factor.

Remember that if you are already listed then most search engines will pick up your changes on the next index.

However, all that said, if you really must resubmit for any reason then I always stick to no more than three pages per day per search engine. Many will allow far more than this but I just stick with what works for me.

And don't resubmit the same pages moe than once within a four to five week period.

I suggest not resubmitting at all unless you really, really have to.

The site is about a year old and doing very well, but was never submitted to any major search engines. I'm an intern at this company and was given the responsibility to submit our URL to the major search engines which I did. Before I leave, I'm supposed to create a spreadsheet that outlines the submission/resubmission schedule. So, you are saying I shouldn't worry about resubmitting once I'm in most of the indexes?

Submitting to the engines has with it a great deal of misinformation out there with MANY companies including real big names selling automated submission services to unsuspecting people.

"I will submit your site to thousands of search engines for 1 year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Believe me, if you have to submit, one time by hand is all you need. Of course, you should have at least one major link leading to your web site before you submit to anyone. A directory link is your best bet.

Whoops. Forgot that one. I am an absolute firm believer in using manual submission only. Call me an old control freak if you like but I like to know exactly what is going where at all times.

Manual submissions directly to the engines are the only methods we use...

I prefer manual submissions as well, when they are needed.

I have one site that is ranked #1 on just about every search engine out there, and I haven't submitted it to an engine in almost 2 years now! Because there is no need to.
